Be it known that I, CONRAD H. MATTHIns- SEN, of Odell, in the county of Livingston and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable- Bedstead, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The objectof my invention is to provide a new and improved bedstead which can readily be adjusted higher or lower at the foot end, and whereby any desired inclination can be given to the bedstead from the head to the foot end.

The invention consists in the combination, with a bedstead, of a supporting-frame pro vided at the foot with toothed plates forhold ing a rod that supports the foot end of the bedstead.

The invention further consists in the combination, with the bedstead side rails, of longitudinally-apertured end posts, and of heavy screw-bolts passed through the apertured end posts, and through eyes and apertured plates on the end pieces of the bedstead, to connect the side rails and end pieces.

The invention also consists in parts and details and combinations of the same.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all. the figures.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of my improved adjustable bedstead, parts being broken out and others in section. Fig. 2 isa plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of one of the end pieces of the bedstead.

The bedstead consists of two combined partsthe bedstead proper and the support for the same.

The bedstead proper is constructed with two side rails, A, provided with end posts, B, having apertures G extending from top to bottom.

A slot, E, is formed in the inner side of each end post, B, near the bottom, which slot serves to receive a plate, F, projecting from the corresponding end edge of the corresponding end piece, G, at thebottom, the projecting (N0 model.)

A staple or eye, H, projects from the end edge of each end piece, G, near the top, the said staples or eyes resting on the upper ends of the posts B when the plates F are in the slots.

Heavy screw-bolts I, provided at their upper ends with heads I, are passed through the eyes H, the apertnresG in the posts l3, and are screwed into the apertured ends ofthe plates F within the posts 13.

The plates F are secured by means of screws to the bottom edges of the end pieces, G.

On the inner surface of the bottom or foot end piece, G, a cushion or foot-rest, T, is held by an elastic band, J, or by other devices.

The bedstead-support consists of two end frames, K and L, united by side rails, M, the frame K having a crossbar, N, on which the upper or head ends of the bedstead side rails, A, can rest, blocks N being secured to the bottom edges of the rails A to hold the said rails in place on the cross-bar N.

On the inner sides of the posts of the footframe L plates P are secured, which are notched to form upwardlyprojecting teeth for supporting a cross-rod, B, having end heads, S, for preventing the rod from sliding off.

The head end of the bedstead rests on the crossbar N of the frame K between the end posts of the frame, and the foot end of the bedstead rests on the rod R between the posts of the frame L.

The foot end of the bedstead can be held higher or lower by placing the rod. It on teeth of the plates 1? a greater or less distance from the upper ends of the said plates.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination, with the frames K and L, of the rails M uniting them, the plates P, secured to the legs of the frame L, and having upwardly-projecting teeth, and the rod R, having heads S on the ends, substantially as herein shown and described.
