Beit known that I, GEORGE' WALTER POW- v ELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oxford, in thelcounty of Chenango and` 'D'. F F designate chairsupporting strips,

`State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Swinging Chair and Crib; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked t-hereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and' useful improvements in combined swinging chairs and cradles; and it consists in the provision of a swinging chair andA a crib which are mounted in the same frame, connected by means of a detachable platform, means being provided whereby the cradle may be adj usted to be held in different positions and the provision of means for adjusting the swinging beams which support` the chair and crib, whereby the swinging motion may be varied.

Theinvention will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims and is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form part of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved combination swinging chair and crib. Fig. 2 is a View showing the swinging chair adjusted as an extended crib. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the detachable platform, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the notched board which may be utilized as a table for the chair or bottom for the crib.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A A designate the upright posts Of theA frame, which are connected by suitable braces B, said posts sup-y portingr a platform C. The upper ends of said posts are connected together by braces B', and cross-pieces D are bolted or votherwise secured to said posts adjacent to their upper ends, the ends of said cross-pieces projecting beyond the edges of 'said posts and recessed, as at D. Adjustably held in said recesses are the rods or shafts E, which may be held in said cross-pieces by means of headed screws in the shaft or rod resting in notches which are apertured at their upper ends and journaled on one of said rods or shafts E. To the lower ends of the strips F is held a rung G, on which the lower ends of the strips H are fastened, said strips H forming the side rails of the chair-back, which has run gs H' and H2, between which the back (being either slatted or solid) is fastened. I I designate the arms to the chair, the outer ends of which arms are fastened to sai'rl strips H, while their forward ends are bolted or Otherwise secured to the strips F. A rungJ is mounted in apertures below the arms, and a seat is supported at its forward end upon said rung J and its rear end upon the rung or cross-piece H'.

The chair as so far described embodies the common construction of swinging chair,

and I make no claim upon the general construction of this swinging chair, the features of novelty of the present invention being involved in certain details which will` now'be described.

Mounted on the opposite ends of the crosspieces D from those carrying the swinging chair are the cradle-supporting strips F', which are mounted on a rod or shaft E in a similar manner as are mounted the strips F, supporting said chair. The lower end of the strips F F carry a rung M, to which the inner ends of the side pieces N of the crib-back are fastened. These side pieces N preferably have their outer ends rounded, as at M', and carry rungs O between said side pieces. The slats O' rare fastened, forming the back of the crib. These slats terminate adjacent tothe inner rungs O, and passing through the strips N, between the inner rungs O and the' rung M, is a bolt or rod Q, which is held in place by means of the head of the bolt or rod at one end and the threaded screw on the other end. P designates a rung which is mounted in apertures in the crib-supporting strips F' a suitable distance above the lower end of said strips. Mounted on said rung P is one end of the bottom R of the crib, said bottom passing through a space intervening between the inner rung O and the rod Q'and held in place by said rung and the bolt or rod adjacent to roo,

the inner ends of the slats forming the back of the crib.

To each of the crib-supporting strips F is pivoted the inner end of an adjustable notched side strip S, which is mounted upon a bolt S. Secured to the upper or outer edge of said notched strips is a strip T, which is cut away at T', forming a shoulder against which the upper edges of the strips N are adapted to strike to limit their inner throw. The inner end of each strip T is recessed at T2, forming a shoulder which is adapted to limit the upward throw of the strips S and T as the shoulders at the ends of the recess T2 come in contact with the outer edges of the supports F. The lower edges of the strips S have notches W, which are adapted to be engaged by the pins X, which are fastened to the outer faces of the strips N at positions substantially midway the length of said strips or side pieces. The outer ends of the slats O are preferably cut away, as illustrated, and the pitch or position at which it is desired to have the crib `hung may be regulated by placing said pins Xin corresponding notches in the two adjustable strips S, as will be understood.

The rungs at the lower ends of the stripsF and F are cut away at locations adjacent to the inner faces of the strips H and N, and an adjustable platform Y, having side cleats Y', is provided, said cleats having notches Z in their under edges adjacent to their projecting ends, which are adapted to engage said cut-away portions of the rungs held at the lower ends of the strips F and FC By means of this detachable platform a person may sit in the swinging chair, while an infant may be placed in the crib, and the two may swing tonether.

By placing the rods or shafts in the crosspieces D in the outer or inner notches and the lower ends of the strips F being held in the same relative position to each other, it will be observed that the motion of the swinging of the chair and crib may be Varied, this being caused by lthrowing the upper ends of the strips F and F farther from or nearer to each other.

V designates a table which has notches V in its opposite edges, said table being designed for use in front of the chair, the notches adapted to fit over the adjacent edges of the strips F and F and rest upon the ends of the arms I of the chair and upon projections on the inner edges of the strips F. If desired,

said table when not in use may be employed as an extension of the bottom for the crib.

When it is desired to utilize the crib independent of the chair, the platform may be detached and the swinging chair held back 6o out of the way, allowing the crib to have a free swinging motion in the center of the frame.

What I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A combined swinging chair and crib, comprising the frame, the cross-pieces mounted at the upper ends thereof, pivotal rods mounted in said cross-pieces, the swinging chair mounted on one of said rods, the cribsupporting strips supported from the other rod, notched bars pivoted to said crib-supporting strips, the crib-back pivoted to the crib-supporting strips near their lower ends, lugs on the outer edges of the crib -back adapted for engagement with the notches of Said bars, a crib-bottom secured to the cribsupporting strips and having its free end supported by the crib-back, and a detachable platform connecting the chair and crib, as set forth.

2. In combination with the swinging chair and frame supporting the same, a swinging crib and pivoted strips supporting same, a detachable platform connecting the same with the chair, the pivoted back, notched bars pivoted to said strips, and lugs on said back for engagement with the notches of said bars, a bolt or rod passing through the side pieces of the back of the crib, with a space intervening between the same and the inner end of the' back of said crib, and a crib-bottom held at its inner end to the crib-supporting strips, and passed through the space intervening between the inner end of the back of the crib, andthe bolt adjacent thereto, as Set forth.

3. In combination'with the swinging chair and crib the supporting-strips for said crib as described, the pivoted back of the criby and notched bars pivoted to the crib-supportico ing strips, the shoulders T' on the inner edges of said notched bars, adapted to form stops against which the longitudinal edges of the back strike as the back is swung to limit the inner throw of the back of the erib, and the 105 shoulders adjacent to the inner pivoted ends of said notched bars, which are adapted to contact with the outer edges of the crib-supporting strips, as set forth.
