E. EGGERT. COMBINED CHAIR AND STEP LADDER.
ERNST EGGERT, OF SAGINAW, MICHIGAN.
COiVlBlNED CHAIR AND STEP LADDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,837, dated January 2, 1894.
Application filed August 29, 1893- To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNST EGGERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Chair and Step- Ladder; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention is a combined chair and step ladder and consists in the special features of construction and the combination shown and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective of the combined chair and step ladder when used as a chair. Fig. 2 is the same view with the step ladder attachment removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the chair and step ladder when used as a step ladder. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the removable seat S. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the chair when used as a chair.
The combined chair and step ladder consists of three parts: the chair A as shown in Fig. '2, a step ladder attachment B, and the removable seat S. The chairA is an ordinary chair frame provided with arms 6, a, supported above the seat of the chair upon an extension a of the front legs a, these arms 6, e, forming a part of the arms of the combined chair. Midway between the arms and the seat in the extension to are holes 0, as hereinafter described. Instead of the ordinary rounds in the front of the chair connecting the front legs a, (1,1 form three steps commencing at or near the bottom and at regular distances apart, the top one being part of the support for the seat of the chair, as the steps 1, 2, and 3 shown in Fig. 2.
Pivoted in the holes 0 by the pivots c is the step ladder attachment B consisting of the side pieces I) b',connected by flat pieces shown as steps 4, 5 and 6, the top step 4 as shown in Fig. 1 being on the line with the top step 3 shown in Fig. 2, the step 5 on a line with step 2 of the chair, and the step 6 at the base of the side pieces 5' and b. The side pieces b and b are connected together at their top by the flat horizontal pieces (1, on a line with and Serial No. 472.432. (No model.)
forming an extension of the arms of the combined chair and step ladder when used as a chair, as shown in Fig. 1. The side pieces I), b, are not parallel but are connected together at their base to the step 6, but separate at an angle from that point. The piece I) in which is formed the pivot 0' extends along the side of the leg a of the chair on the outside thereof,.the legs a, a being inside of the step ladder attachment.
S is a removable seat or bottom, upholstered or otherwise as the case may be, and adapted to slide into the chair A and above the steps 3 and 4 when turned down, and thus forming a bottom for the chair. In order to use the chair as a step ladder this removable seat must be taken out. The attachment B is then turned upward, revolving on the pivot c, the step 4 just clearing the arms 8, e, of the chair A, and the step 6 coming to the top of the back of the chair.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a chair A having a removable seat S, flat pieces 1,2, 3 connecting the front legs of the chair and forming regular steps, the top piece 3 being part of the support for the seat of the chair, the arms 6, e supported upon an extension a of the front legs of the chair, the extension a provided with holes 0, of pivots 0 connected to a step ladder attachment B, consisting of the side pieces 12' and b on each side thereof, the fiat pieces 4, 5, and 6, connecting the side pieces at regular distances, the top piece 4 being in the same horizontal plane as the top piece 3 of the chair A when the step ladder attachment B is attached to the chair A and used as a chair, the arms cl, d, supported on the top of the side pieces on a line with and forming extensions of the arms e, e, and the removable seat S adapted to slide upon the parts 3 and 4 and form the seat of the chair when used as a chair, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ERNST EGGERT.
