UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN SOHRENKEISEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHEAI RS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,567, dated November 27, 1877; application filed October 20, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARTIN SoHRENKEIsEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Piano and Office Chairs, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front view of one of my improved chairs; Fig. 2, a side view of the same, and Fig. 3 adetail bottom view of the chair detached from its base.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved office and piano chair, which shall be so constructed that its back will bear against the back of the sitter when sitting erect, and when leaning forward, and at the same time will allow him to lean back, and will support him when leaning back.
The invention consists in the combination of the bars, the brackets, and the springs with the back and the seat of a chair, and whether the arms be used or not, as hereinafter fully described.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the base or pedestal of the chair, which is provided with a screw-socket to receive the screw B, attached to the seat 0. D is the back of the chair, the side posts of which project a little below the seat 0, and to them are attached the rear ends of the bars E. The bars E project forward beneath the seat 0, and their for- I ward ends are pivoted to brackets F, attached to the seat O.
G G are springs coiled around arms of the brackets F, andwhich are secured to said arms. The other ends of the springs G project to the rearward, and have hooks formed upon them to hook upon pins or projections 0, attached to or formed upon the arms E. By this construction the back D will beheld upward and forward by the arms E, brackets F, and springs Gr, so as to fully support the sitter when leaning back, and bear against his back when sitting erect and when leaning forward.
The chair may be provided with arms H; but in this case the lower ends of the said arms are pivoted to lugs attached to the seat 0, so that the pivots ofthe arms H and of the bars E of the back D may be in line with each other, or nearly so.
7 Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the bars E, the brackets F, and the springs G with the back D and the seat 0 of a chair, andwhether the arms H be used or not, substantially as shown and described.
MARTIN SGHRENKEISEN.
