Description

(No Model.)
. A. P. BROWN.
(EH-AIR.
No. 543,640. Patented Jul so, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
ALVA P. BROWN, on HILLSDALE, INDIANA.
CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 543,640, dated July 30, 1895.
Application filed April 23,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVA P. BROWN, residing at Hillsdale, county of Vermillion, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and
. exact description of the invention, such as ranged that the back and seat may be tightened when it becomes loose, or may be easily and quickly removed, and a new piece of canvas secured to' the chair replacing it.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which, withthe letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved chair; Fig. 2, a central vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail of the adjusting-pin; Fig. 4, a detail of the retaining-bar which holds the canvas to the frame of the back of the chair.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the back upright posts of a rocking-chair, pivoted at their lower extremities by the pins or to the braces 13, held at their lower ends to the rockers and at their upper ends to the posts or legs 0.
D is a round held between the legs 0, and E E are arms pivoted at their forward ends to the tops of the posts 0, their rear ends having a series of perforations c c, and F are dowels held in the upright posts A and adapted the chair.
1895. Serial No.646,946. (No model.)
' to move in recesses in'the arms E and designed to receive the screws G, passing through the perforations c, for the purpose of adjusting the tension of the canvas after it is applied to One end of the canvas K is held to the round L, thence passed over the round D, thence back under the said round L, thence upward and secured to the round M, having the flattened ends m, adapted to slip into the slots N,to hold the said rounds M from turning. The foot-rest consists of the wheels O,mounted on a shaft carried by the rods P, held to the cross-piece Q. R is a rod adj ustably held to the cross-piece Q.
When it is desired to attach the canvas to the chair, one end' thereof is secured to the round L, thence passed over the front round, thence under the round L, and its other end attached to the round M, which latter is placed in the slot N, the back and bottom or seat being slack. The tension of the back and seat may be regulated by adjusting the pins carried on the upright portions A, so that they will be seated in the recesses on the inner surfaces of the armsE and held therein by means of screws G, which hold the pins or dowels in said recesses.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1 In a chair, the combination with the continuous canvas back and bottom K having one end secured to a round L, thence passed over a round D and under round L, the removable round M carrying the other end of the said canvas, the rear posts the posts A pivoted thereto and carrying said removable round M, of the legs 0 and arms E pivoted at their forward ends to said legs, and the rear ends of said arms adjustably held to dowels carried by the upright posts A, whereby the said canvas may be tightened or loosened, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALVA P. BROWN,
Witnesses:
JOHN W. OASEBEER, WILLIAM A. YORK.
