To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PAYToN JoENsoN, of Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SwingingChairs; and I do hereby declarethat the follcwin g is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification;

The same letters and figures of reference are used to indicate the corresponding parts.

Figure lis a side elevation of the chair with its back upright and its foot-rest lowered when used for sitting purposes. Fig. 2 is -a view of the opposite side of the chair with its back lowered and foot-rest raised when used as a reclining-chair. Fig. 3 is a detail view, in sec-- Y tion, of the plates with the clamping-bolt.

This invention has'relation to improvements in convertible chairs, and' it` consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as hereinafter shown, described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A represents in y'improved chair, having the seat A'; and B is the back thereof, provided with side bars or standards,-B', having their lower ends pivoted to the rear ends of the seat A', and provided with arms C, hinged to theirouter 'faces l to the lower ends of the bars D, and they are provided with projections b, which engage the notches a' when said foot-hoard is thrown in position to come in contact therewith.`

The letters F, F', F2, and F3 represent the legs of the chair, which are inclined toward each other, and are securedtogether at their upper ends by means of a rod or shaft, G., which pivots the chair-seat to saidlegs. This rod Gr is provided with a projecting end, b', for a purpose hereinafter described.

The legs F, F', F2, and Fg'are connected togetherneartheirmiddleportions bybraces c e', and a crossbar, H, is secured thereto, which is provided with adrum, 1,liavingaooiled spring, d', the lower end of which is fastened to the bar H, while its upper end is secured to the front edge of the chair-seat. At one side of this chair-seat is a plate, I, having a curved slot, It, in which are secured buckets I', lhavin g spiral springs h'. i

To the upper ends of the legs F F' is secured a plate, J, having a projecting screw,1`, which passes through the slot /L ot the plate I, and a thumb-nut, i', is applied thereon for the purpose of holding the chair seat and legs together when not in use as a rocker. To the outer end ot' one of the chair-arms is hinged a the projecting end b' of the rod or shaft G, for the purpose of adjusting the back and foot-rest bars D to any position the occupant desires. When a recumhent position is desired the bar J' is moved downward andoue of its upper perforations engaged with the projecting end of the shaft. This swings the back downward and the foot-rest upward, so that they shall approach more or less the plane ofthe seat, as shown in Fig. 1.

In a swinging or reclining chair, the combination of thelegs with the seat pivoted thereto, and having the slotted plates and adjusting-screw and the coil-springs attached to the legs and operating upon the seat, substantially as described and set forth.
