RECLlNlNG-CHAIR.
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352.773, dated November 16, 1886.
Applicat-ion filed January 8, 1886. Serial No. 188,023. (No model.)
lo a recumbent, or other form at will.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation representing an articulated .rockingchair embodying my invention, portions in this and succeeding figures being '15 removed or broken away to display the working parts. 2 is a top View of the forward portion of the chair, the foot-rest being shown extended.
ing or stretching device of the hammock. Fig.
4'is'a section of the eatchof the arm-slide.
-Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the adjusting mechanism of the foot-rest. Fig. 6 is a verticalsection of the chair in condition ofa rocking couch. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of my chair in condition of a cot or hammock-bed.
Figs. 8 and 9 are respectivel yavertical section and a side elevation of a portion of one of the chair rockers with my removable foot attached thereto.
0 The base or lowest member of my chair consists, preferably, of a rocking frame, A, from whose front portion rise two rigidly-attached posts, B, that are firmly joined at their upper parts by a stretcher or cross-piece, O. Connected by pivots D to the rocking frame a little in rear of its mid-length are the two sides of my chair-back E, which sides are at their upper ends firmly joined together by astretcher, F. Connected by pivots D to the upper ends of posts B are standards G, whose upper ends are in turn similarly articulated by pivots D to the chair-arms H. Spring-catches I on the rear ends are capable of engagement in any of the seriesofholes e in the sides of the chair- 5 back E. These holes 6 are in the bottom of a groove, 6, in said sides, which groove holds a slide, J which is traversed by. the pin i of the spring-catch I, and which hasa stud, j, that occupies an eye, h, in the rear end of arm H.
5o To support the occupant I provide a paillasse or hammock, K, of stout canvas or other Fig. 3 is a rear view of the wind-,
the chair.
strong and flexible material. The lower or front end of said hammock has aloop or hem, k, which is engaged around a removable rod, L,
that occupies orifices bin the posts B. The
upper or rear end of said hammock has loops which are engaged on studsm of a Windlass,
M,which is journaled in the upper part of the adjustment, so as to hold the hammock to either a stretched or a slack condition, asmay be required. This construction permits ready substitution of a clean or new hammock for a worn or soiled one, or the application of hammocks of different materialsuch, for example, as are suitable for summer and winter use, respectively, or for use by invalids.
The standards G and the chair-arms Hare retained in any regular position to which they may be adjusted by pin 0 of spring-catch 0' upon the arm engaging in one orother notch p of segment-rack P upon the standard G. The hinges Q serve to secure to the posts B a leg-rest, T, to which .is secnredby hingesQ a foot-rest, UI The leg-rest T is capable of being held at any desired angular elevation by brace V, whose lower end may engagein any notch of a rack, WV, andmay be released therer from by bar X, secured by pivot 00 to the end of a bent lever, Y, within convenient reach of the occupant. The foot-rest U may be supported at any desiredangle by means of chains Z, which extend from the upper part of the leg-rest to. books it, so as to make said foot-rest available for use in the sitting conditions of Said foot-rest is also capable of being made available for use in the recum bent or semi-reclining position by releasing the chains Z and suffering the said foot-rest to rest upon the shoulders t of the leg-rest T, as seen in Fig. 2.
Secured by hinges Q to post B is a seat or cushion, R, which, when folded upward and backward, as shown in Fig. 1, serves as aseat, and when unfolded, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, restsupon the foot-rest, (which is raised to support it at any desired angle,) and does duty as an extension of the hammock, and may be .utilized to support the occupants feet, as in the recumbent form shown inFig. 5, or to support the occupants head, as shown in the reclining form represented in Fig. 7.
Secured by hinges Q to seat or extension R is an additional extension, S, having a padding, s, on one side of it. This extension may be unfolded, as in Fig. 6, so as to serve as a foot-rest for the occupant in the recumbent position, or may be folded over upon the extension R, so as to present its padded surface s uppermost, for a head-rest for the occupant when in a reclining position. (See Fig. 7.)
In the reclining form shown in Fig. 7 the chair or cot is supported in front on its rockers A and at back on the extremities of its back side pieces, E, so that in this condition the article is no longer a rocking one, but stands firmly on the four points of support afforded by the rocking frame and the back.
The chair may also be prevented from rock- I ing in any one of its other positions-such as those shown in Figs. 1 and 7, by attaching to one or both ends of each rocker a removable foot, 1, whose yoke 2 embraces the rocker and has tapped into it a set-screw, 3, which bears against afollower, 4, between which and the yoke the rocker is clamped, together with interposed india-rubber pieces 5, by means of said-set-screw. Theindia-rubberpieces enable tighter clamping and prevent injury to the rocker-surface.
I disclaim a seat which rests upon the side pieces of a hammock-chair and is held by lugs, as such is not new.
I claim as new and of my invention- 1. In a reclining-chair, the combination, with the rocking base-frame A B C, of the backframe E F, pivoted to the rockers A of said base-frame, and having in its sides grooves e and rows of holese, arms H,having at their outer ends hinged and, angularly-adj ustable connection with the posts B, and at the other ends slides J, riding in the grooves e, and pins i, which pass through slides J and engage said holes 6, substantially as set forth.
2. In a reclining-chair, the combination, with-the rocking base-frame A B G, of the back-frame E F, pivoted to the rockers A of said base-frame, standards G, pivoted to the upper extremities of posts 13, and having segment-racks P, arms H, pivoted at their front ends to said standards, spring-catches O on said arms engaging with segment-racks P, and adjustable connections between the rear ends of arms H and the back E F, substantially as set forth.
3. In an adjustable chair, the combination, with the removable rod L, that occupies holes in the posts B, and with a Windlass, M, in the chair-back E, having the handle m, spring.
catch N, and studs m, of the removable paillasse or hammock K, having at one end a loop or hem, k, and at the other end loops k, which engage said studs m, substantially as set forth.
4. In combination with a chair having a stretcher or ham mock, a seat or cushion hinged to the front part of the chair between the front legs, and so adapted to rest at its free extremity directly upon said stretcher, whereby the latter is held taut, substantially as set forth.
5. In combination with a chair having a stretcher or hammock, K, a seat or cushion, R, hinged to the front part of the chair, and an additional extension, S, hinged to the seat or cushion R, and having the pad 8, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. In combination with a rocking-chair, the removable foot 1, having rocker-embracing yoke 2, with clamping set-screw 3, follower 4, and the india-rubber pieces 5, interposed be tween the rocker and the clampingsurfaces, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
JOHN A. NEW ELL.
