Reclining Chairs. v N0.l55,366, I Paten ted Sept. 29,1874.
THE GRAFHIQCO. PHOTO-H1138 & H PARK PLACE, NY
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN PENN CURRY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN RECLINING-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,366, dated September 29, 1874; application filed June 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN PENN CURRY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Re clining- Chairs, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to improve the construction of reclining-chairs, whereby a more simple, cheap, and durable chair is produced; and to this end it consists in the combination of a worm and rack with an arm of the chair in such a manner as to simplify the adjustment of the back of the chair and footrest from a vertical to a horizontal position, or the reverse, as the occupant of the chair may desire, and to secure them firmly at any required angle, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a chair with my improvements, and Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate, in detail, the various parts of the mechanism.
The body of thechair may be mounted upon a tripod, so as to revolve in the usual manner. The back A is pivoted at a a to the arms and to the frame of the seat on each side. Through a slot in the frame of the seat the lever B passes, and is connected with the rock-shaft O, which rests in bearings secured to the under side of the seat. This rock-shaft carries at one end the segmental rack D, which works in the worm E, and is operated by means of the handle F. The links G, one on each side, connect the rockshaft with the upper section of the foot-rest H, and they are arranged so as to slide upon the bars h h. The foot-rest is constructed in two or more sections, folding on each other, and hinged to the frame of the seat at 9.
By turning the handle F the rock-shaft O is caused to revolve through the medium of the Worm E and rack D, carrying with it the link G and lever B, whereby the back A and foot-rest H are made to assume the positions required of them.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
The Worm E, rack D, and rock-shaft O, in combination with the links G and levers B, for the purpose of adjusting the back A and foot-rest H to any required inclination, as herein set forth.
JOHN PENN CURRY.
