- A. ,0. SRIVER.
FOLDING REOLINING ROGKING CHAIR. No. 261,637. Patented July 25, 1882.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR O. SRIVER, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
FOLDING RECLINING ROCKING-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,637, dated July 25,1882.
Application filed April 20, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR U. SRIVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Reclining Rocking-Uhairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of my chair as a rocker. Fig. 2 is a view showing it adapted for reclining or recumbent purposes. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, and Fig. 4 is a folded view. Fig. 5 is a detailed view.
This invention pertains to improvements in rocking-chairs adapted for reclining purposes and to be folded; and it consists of the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In carrying out my invention I employ rockers A A, constructed at about their middles with upward projecting shoulders a, facing toward the front.
B B are the front legs, pivoted to the forward ends of the rockers A upon a cross-bar or round, b, passing through them.
0 (l are the back standards, in like manner pivoted to the shoulders at of the rockers, and having the back 0 of the usual construction, and preferably upholstered.
D D are the arms, having rests D, and pivoted to the upper ends of the front legs, B, upon a round, a, passing through them, and to the back standards, 0, at a point above their attachment to the front legs.
E is the seat, preferably upholstered and pivoted to the back standards below the back 0.
(No model.)
be adjusted by the notches, again upon said round 0, giving the chair the position indicated in Fig. 2. In this position it is adapted for recumbent or reclining purposes. It will be noticed also that the seat is carried forward in its adjustment, which brings it more nearly in the relation to the back required to produce an easy reclining position for the body. By lifting the seat and folding it against the back when in the latter position the front legs can be folded alongside of the rockers and their rounds will rest thereon, the uppermost one resting also against the shoulders at of the rockers. The back and seat can now be folded forward or down upon the frontlegs and rockers with the arms resting down alongside of the front legs.
It will be remarked that at the pivotal points of the several parts the latter are provided with plates or, provided with holes 0 through which the pivots pass to re-ent'orce them at said points to take the strain off the pivot-apertures. This permits the folding of the chair in the most compactmanner, especially desirable for shipment.
I attach importance to the rigid arm, which is essential to maintain the chair in an upright position.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, substantially as described, ofthe rockers, the rigid frame forming the back and back legs, pivoted to said rockers, the seatframe provided with notches in its forward under sides, pivoted to the back frame, the rigid arms pivoted to the back frame, the front legs pivotedto the rockers, and the pivoting cross-bar 0, connecting the front legs and arms and providing a bearing for the notches of the seat-frame, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR O. SRIVER. Witnesses:
W. H. BROWN, S. S. CHIPMAN.
