ALEXANDER e. FULLER, OF GRAND RAPIDs, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED ROCKING AND RECLINING CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,593, dated October 10, 1882.
Application filed May 11, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Bait known that I, ALEXANDER G.FULLER, a citizen oftheUnited States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Booking and Reclining Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and essentially useful improvements in combined rocking and reclining chairs; and to this end the invention consists in novel features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claim hereto annexed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation ofa rocking-chair to which my improvementis applied; Fig. 2, a vertical section when the parts are arranged to form a reclining-chair. Fig. 3 represents a cross'section through Fig. 2 when the parts are locked to form a rocking-chair.
A represents the base-frame, and B the supporting seat or chair frame, having stationary arm-rests, and its side pieces, I) b, curved on their under sides to form rockers, that rest on the base-fram e, and connected thereto by spiral or other suitable springs, to a, which allow the seat or chair frame to rock on said base-frame, while at the same time preventing the seat or chair frame from coming off from the baseframe; and said side pieces, b b, are provided with auxiliary side pieces, I) b, which project downward sufficiently on the outer sides ofthe (ModeL) acting or automatic, as all that is necessary to place them in any desired position is to lean back a little harder than the natural weight of the body, when the seat and the back frame will adjust themselves; and when desired to bring them to an upright or sitting position all that is necessary is to sit up, when they will follow the motion of the body and will remain at any desired position, they being so balanced that the proper amount ofweight is on the seat to balance the weight on the back frame.
It will be observed that the seat is left free or notfastened at itsfront end, butrests merely on the cross-rails a a of the chair-frame, the rear cross-rail, a acting as a stop when the back frame, D, is substantially in an upright position, as shown in Fig. 2. The front cross-rail, a, s provided with a pivoted spring-hook, c, which, when engaging screw or lug c on the base-frame, stops the rockers, so that it forms only a reclining-chair; but when said springhook is releasedfrom the screw orlugand connected to the seat by the hook being forced into a hole in the bottom of the seat or other-' wise connected thereto the seat and back are held stationary and form a rocking-chair.
Having thus fully described my invention, what'I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the base-frame, rockerframe, and springs for connecting them together, the back frame pivotally connected to the rocker-frame, as shown, the seat pivotally connected at its rear end to the lower end of the back frame, and the lockin g device attached to the rocker-frame, and adapted to engage with the base-frame to prevent rocking and with the seat or back frame to prevent reclining, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature 1n presence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDER GOLDSMITH FULLER.
