TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
Application filed July 1,1905. Serial No. 267.995.
To a/ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that we, CARL A. MELIN and CLAUS E. JOHNSON, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to extension-tables. Its object is to provide a table having amininnm number of parts in its top; and it consists in so arranging such parts and their supports that they may be slid together parallel to each other to diminish the length of the table and be drawn out and arranged in a parallel plane to increase the length thereof.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a bottom plan View of a table embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a section through the dotted 'line 2 2 of Fig. 1 of the parts there shown and as there arranged. Fig.A 3 is a section at the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 2 of the complete table. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the table with its leaves extended. Fig. 5 is a section at the dotted line 5 5 in Fig. 4 of parts there shown.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
A A are side rails, and A2 A2 end rails, the two latter having transverse slots a therein secured together rectangularly t0 form the supporting-frame of the table, which is provided with legs A2.
B B are parallel bars connecting the end rails A2 A3 of the table supporting-frame.
C is a bolster extending transversely across and secured to the central portion of the upper side of the table supporting-frame, whereof it forms a part.
D D and D2 D3 are two pairs of blocks secured transversely to the under side of the bolster C. The bars B B and pairs of blocks D D D2 D2, together with the slots a in the end rails A2 A2, constitute slideways for parts yet to be described, and will be so designated hereinafter.
E is the top proper of the table.
E E2 are side rails, and E3 E2 end cleats secured together rectangularly and to the under side of the top E, the side cleats being also connected at their transverse central portions by means of a cross-cleat E2, Figs. 2 and 3, having an upwardly-'widening dovetailed button-recess E6 formed in the under side thereof for a purpose to be explained hereinafter.
F F' are dowel-pins fast in and extending transversely downward from the cross-cleat E2 into vertically-loose connection with corresponding transverse holes F2 F3 in the bolster C to permit slight upward and downward movements of the top E, limited by pintles F4, inserted through such dowel-pins F F.
G is a slidable leaf provided with transverse parallel slides G, fast thereto and having locking-slots G2 therein and stops G3 thereon, the for ner to engage the cleat E2 and the latter the end rail A2.
H is a slidable leaf provided with transverse parallel slides H', fast thereto and having locking-slots H2 therein-and' stops H3 thereon, the former to engage thecleat E3 and the latter the end rail A2.
The slides G H of the slidable leaves G H are inserted into and are operative in the slideways formed by the bars B B', two pairs of blocks D D' ,and D2 D3 and the transverse slots a in the rails A2 A2, and suchl leaves may be slid thereon under and into registration with the top E of the table.
I is a pintle having its end portions squared and vertically mounted by its central cylindrical portion in the bolster C of the tableframe.
J is an upwardly-widening dovetailed button mounted on the upper end portion of the pintle I and adapted to enter and engage the sloping sides of its corresponding dovetailed recess vE6 in the cross-cleat E5 of the top E of the table.
K, Fig. 1, is an annular recess formed in the under faces of the bolster C and slidable leaves G H concentrically with the pintle I.
L is a button mounted on the lower end portion of the pintleI and provided with lugs L', projecting therefrom into the annular recess K in the parts C, G, and H to lock them together when so desired.
M M are stops for the button L, seated in the annular recess K.
In Figs. l, 2, and 3 the table is shown with its extension-leaves G H slid completely inward against and locked to the bolster C of the frame by means of the button L and with the top E also locked down upon such bolster and extension-leaves by means of the button J.
In Figs. 4 and 5 the button L is shown turned out of engagement with the extensionleaves G H and the button J out of engagement with the cross-cleat E2-of the top E,

thereby leaving the latter free to travel' A of the cleats E2. E4 with the slots G2 H2 in the slides G H and also by the engagement of the stops G3 H3 on the latter with the end rails A2 A3 of the frame.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An extension-table, comprising a frame having slideways therein, a top provided with dowel-pins extending transversely downward therefrom into vertically loose connection with the frame, two slidable leaves disposed on either side of such top and provided with transverse parallel slides fast thereto and inserted into and operative in the slideways in the frame, a pintle I vertically mounted in the frame and provided, at its lower end, with a button L for engaging an annular groove K, in the frame and leaves, to lock them together, and at its upper end, with a button J for engaging a recess, in the table-top to lock it upon such frame and leaves, when the latter are retracted, substantially as described.
2. An extension-table, comprising a frame having slideways therein, a top E provided with dowel-pins F F extending transversely downward therefrom, into vertically -loose connection with the frame, two slidable leaves G H provided with transverse parallel slides G H fast thereto and inserted into and operative in the slideways in the frame, a pintle vertically mounted in the frame, and provided at its lower end with a button for engaging an annular groove K in the frame and leaves, to lock them together, and further provided,
' at its upper end, with a button for engaging a button-recess E, in the table-top E, to lock it upon such frame and leaves when the latter are retracted under and registered with the top, substantially as described.
3. An extension-table, comprising a frame having side rails and also end rails A2` A2, which have slideways cut therein, a top provided with dowel-pins F F extending transversely downward therefrom into verticallyloose connection with the frame, and with end cleats E3, E2, attached to the Linder side of said top at the ends thereof, two slidable leaves G H, disposed on either side of such top adapted to lie beneath the same a-nd provided with transverse parallel slides fast thereto and having locking-slots G2 H2 therein lying in said slideways and stops G3 H3 thereon, the former to engage the cleats E3 E2 of the table-top and the latter the end rails A2A3 of the frame, to lock the slidable leaves eX- tended into the same plane with such tabletop, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
