To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LASLOW SARKOZE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Torrington, in the county of Litehfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension- Tables; and I do declare'the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which. it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to tables, and more especially to those which extend at the ends of the table or lengthwise, and the object of the same is to produce improved means for keeping the feet of all the legs on the ground whether the table is extended or not. This object is carried out by constructing the table in the manner hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and as shown in the drawings wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of this table in its normal condition, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the table as expanded. Figs. 4 and 5 are cross sections on the lines 44 and 55 respectively of Fig. 2. Fig. .6 is a bottom plan view partly broken away, showing the midlength of the main section of the table.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the top of the intermediate or main section of this table, which top overlies but is not secured to a frame. The latter is composed of end rails 2, side rails 3, and legs 4 depending from the corners of the frame thus built up, the legs being in pairs as shown and for a purpose yet to appear; and to the inner faces of the side faces are secured grooved cleats 5 as best seen in Fig. 5. The side rails are connected at their midlength by a cross strip 6 having a slot along its length near its center as at 7 ,-its

ends projecting beyond the side rails as seen in Fig. 6 and being made dove-tailed as at 8; and blocks 9 are secured beneath the main table top 1 and provided with dovetailed recesses 10 in which said ends 8 fit loosely. A strip of inverted T-shaped cross section 11, is secured across the bottom of the top 1 and projects through the slot 7 in the strip 6, and the head thereof is disposed so far beneath the lower face of the table top that the strip 6 may rise and fall on the shank of the T-shaped structure thus provided at the same time that the ends 8 move vertically in the recesses 10. Thus the table top section 1 may rest squarely on the upper edges of the end and side rails or it may be raised off of them-as seen in Fig. 2 for a purpose yet to appear.

Each end section comprises a top 18 mounted rigidly upon an-end rail 12 and two side rails 13, and supported by legs 14. The latter are in pairs as also are the legs 4 at the corners of :the main section, and when the end sections are pushed inward as seen in Fig. 1 four legs appear at the corner of the table whereas when the end sections are drawn out the main section is left supported at each corner by two legs and each end section similarly supported at each of its individual corners. the grooves of the cleats 5, and by preference said rails are slotted as at 15, the slots engaging pins 16 so that the side rails may not be drawn completely out of place. The upper inner corners of these rails are notched as at 17 to underlie the strips 6 when housed within the main section, as seen in Fig. 2, but if these notches were omitted the side rails 13 could not be of the length shown in the drawing. Also the pins 16 and slots 15 might be omitted, although I prefer to employ them. Hand grips 19 are provided beneath the outer edges of the tops 18 for the obvious purpose of drawing them outward when desired. A table constructed in this manner presents ordinarily the appearance shown in Fig. 1 and in section in Fig. 2. When now it is desired to extend this table the operator grasps one of the grips 19 and draws outward on it whereby the whole end section moves to the position seen at the left of Fig. 3. \Vhen the inner edge of the top 18 comes opposite the outer edge ofthe main top 1 (which latter has thus far been supported by the end top 18) the main top drops the thickness of the material so that thereafter its upper face stands flush with the top of the end section. The other end section is then extended in the same manner. The contact of the meeting edges of the tops 1 and 18 prevents either end section from moving inward or twisting, while the pins 16 and slots 15 if employed will prevent the end sections from being drawn outward too far. The main top 1 now rests square on the frame of the main section and is held in place between the tops of theend sections, so that no part of the table can become displaced and yet The side rails 13 slide in l all the legs stand squarely on the floor. To restore the parts to What might be called their normal posit-ion, it is only necessary to lift one end of the main top 1 and shove the end section inward beneath it, and then repeat the operation at the other end of the table. The inner ends of the side rails 18 now assume the position shown in Fig. 2, and. the main top 1 is raised the thickness of the lumber and lies upon the tops of the two and sections. All parts may be of the desired proportions, materials, and finish Without departing from the principle of the invention.

What is claimed as new is:

An extension table comprising main and end sections, each consisting of a top, a frame on Which it rests, and legs supporting the frame, cleats inside the side rails of the main section on which slide the side rails of each end section, the last-named rails being notched in the r nner corners and slotted longitudinally, pins 1n said cleats With which the slots slidably engage, a cross strip connecting the side rails of the main section and having a slot along its length and its ends extended beyond said side rails'and provided with dove-tailed heads, a strip of inverted T-shaped section depending from the top and loosely engaging said slot, and I nesses.
