To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen A. Moore, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tarpon Springs, in'the county of Pinellas and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ex tension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to extension tables and has as its object to provide a table of this class in which the extension leaves are at all times assembled with the table both when the table is extended and when it is completely closed or only partly extended, the construction being such that the extension leaves may be housed beneath the main leaves of the table top when not in use and will consequently not be liable to accumulate dust nor become misplaced as it frequently happens when the extension leaves must be bodily removed from the table when the table is to be closed.
Another aim of the invention is to so construct and arrange theextension leaves of the table top that they will be firmly and rigidly supported when in use and will be adapted to sustain considerable weight Without likelihood of collapse.
The invention further aims to provide means for automatically separating the extension leaves from each other and from the main leaves of the table top when the main leaves are separated for the purpose of dispensing with one or all of the extension leaves.
Another aim of the invention is to provide novel means for connecting the legs of the table with the under-frame structure thereof in such manner that the said legs may be disconnected and stored within the said frame when the table is to be packed for shipment.
In the accompanyingv drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the table'embodying the present invention, the top thereof being in extended condition. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of one side of the table, the same being shown closed or contracted. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the table in extended condition. Fig. 4 is a similar view but illustrating the table closed. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the table closed. Fig. 6 is a similar view illustrating one of the extension leaves partly moved to position for use. Fig. 7 is a similar view illustrating the extension leaves in position for use.
The table embodying the present invention includes a leg supported frame which slidably supports the main leaves of the table top and beneath the said main leaves the extension leaves are to bE'hOllSGd when not in use and the said frame includes end rails 1 and side rails 2 and 3, each side rail 3 being spaced inwardly from and extending parallel to the respective one of the side rails 2. The end rails 31 and side rails 2 are suitably connected at the corners of the frame and the ends of the side. rails 3 are suitably secured to the end rails 1 the said end rails 1 and side rails 2 being formed in their inner sides with grooves 4 receiving the edges of substantially triangular corner plates 5. The corner plates 5 occupy planes immediately below the ends of the respective side rails 3 and hence serve as additional supporting means for the said ends of these rails and each of the corner plates is provided with an opening 6 and each of the rails 8 is provided with a recess in which is disposed a nut 7.
The table legs are indicated by the numeral 8 and each is provided at its upper end with a threaded stud 9 adapted to be fitted through the openings 6 and turned into the respective nuts 7. The legs are in this manner detachably connected with the table frame and yet in such manner that they may be readily removed without the use of a wrench or other tool whenever it is desired to dispose the legs within the frame for purpose of shipment.
The main leaves of the table top are indicated each by the numeral 10 and secured to the under side of each of the said leaves 10 and extending parallel and adjacent to the lateral edge of the leaf is a slide 11, these slides terminating at one end adjacent the outer transverse edge of the leaf and at their other ends extending beyond the inner transverse edge of the leaf. The leaves 10 are slidably disposed upon and supported by the upper edges of the side and end rails of the table frame and the slides 11 work through openings 12 formed in theend rails of the said frame, these openings being concealed, in the closed condition of the table, by a transverse rail 13 connecting the first mentioned ends of the said side rails. .As
i above stated, theslides'll of each leaf each leaf and they project to such distance that when the leaves are. pulled outwardly to the fullest extent the projecting ends of the slides of one leaf will extend beneath the adjacent side of the other leaf and in this manner the leaves are effectually braced when in extended pos'tion. It will be observed, furthermore, by reference to Figs. 5, 6 and 7 of the drawings, that the slides 11 extend beside each other between theside rails 2 and 3 at the corresponding side of the frame of the table and in order that the slides may be better guided and the leaves aifordedadditional support against tilting when extended, each slide 11 is provided with one or more laterally projecting studs 14 which work in grooves 15 and 16 formed in the opposing faces of the side rails 2 and 3 respectively. The inner transverse edge of one leaf 10 is provided with the usual dowel pins 17 which fit in sockets formed in the corresponding edge of the other leaf when the leaves are shoved gether so that their said edges will meet, these pins being, of course, designed also to fit in sockets formed in one or another of the extension leaves and the sockets being designed to rece've pins upon one or another of the extension leaves as will be presently made clear.
The extension leaves are supported in a manner which will now be explained, upon a rod 1.8 which is mounted at its ends in the end rails 1 of the table frame and extends longitudinally beneath the leaves of the table top. Each'of the said extension leaves comprises foldably connected sections, one indicated by the numeral 19 and the other by the numeral 20, these sections being connected end to end at the middle of the ex tension leaf as a whole, by means of. hinges 21 of any suitable type and for a purpose to be presently explained the connected or hinged edges of the sections 19 and 20 of each leaf are beveled as indicated at 22. cured to the under side of the section 19 of each of the extension leaves are eye hinges 23, the eyes these hinges rotatably and slidably engaging the rod 18 in the manner clearly shown in' Figs. 3 to 7 of the drawings. The rod 18 is located at one side of the longitudinal middle of the frame of the table and in order that the sections comprising the extension leaves may be supported when folded and housed withinthe frame and beneath the table top, a supporting bar 24 is secured at-its ends to the end rails 1 of the frame at a point opposite but close to the longitudinal medial line of the said table frame.
By reference to Fig. 5 of the drawings it will be observed that when the sections comprising the extension leaves are folded tosaid Fig. 7.

As the said section is thus moved, it will separate from the section Y20 and the section 20 will be slid over the bar 24 and in the direction of the opposite side of-the table until the sections 19 and'20 occupy the same horizontal plane as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings, in which position they will rest 'upon the upper edges of the side bars 2 and 3 and their beveled inner 22 will be-in snug contact, as shown in the It will be observed by reference to the said figure that the bevels 22 exleaf section 19. when thls section is folded and also when it is in use, but also as a fulcrum about which the section may turn in its movement into and out of position for use, which movement of the section upon the rod as a fixed fulcrum serves to automatically advance or retract the section 20; and the bar 24: serves not only to support the ends of the sections remote from the rod 18 when the sections are folded as in Fig. 5, but also as a support and guide for the section ,20 in such manner as. to guide and position the section as shown in Fig. 7 without attention being required of the person grasping and moving the section 19. In order that the hingedly connected ends of the sections 19 and 20 of each extension leaf may be afforded further support, plates 25 are secured to the under side of the section ing edge of, the section-20 when the sections are in position foruse as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings. The
sections of each of the extension leaves are formed with sockets of the section 19' of the leaf to be'brought into use is pulled end or hinged edges 'tendin such direction that the inner end or and provided with dowel pins 26 corre-" sponding to the pins 17 before referred to.-
In order that the extension leaves may be automatically separated and their dowel pins 26. disengaged from their sockets so that manual separation of the leaves will not be necessitated and so that one or more of several of the leaves may be folded without disturbing a leaf or leaves to be left in position for use, at the time the .main leaves 10 are pulled outwardly, means is provided which will now be descnbed.
Secured to the under side of each main leaf 10 is a detent including an attaching portion 27 and a portion 28 which extends downwardly below the inner edge of the said leaf and thence in the direction of the transverse middle of the table and this portion 28 of each detent is provided with an upstanding end orfinger 29 which is designed to engage an abutment strip 30 upon the under side of the respective or adjacent extension leaf. Each attaching portion 27 is further provided at its opposite end with a downwardly projecting stop finger 31 designed to abut against the inner face of the respective end rail 1 for the purpose of limiting the outward sliding movement of the leaf to which the member 27 is secured. The parts 28 and 29 of each detent are so proportioned that when the extension leaves are in use and the leaves have all been shoved together in the manner shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the finger 29 will be spaced inwardly from the abutment strip 30 a distance greater than the length of the dowel pins 17 carried by the said leaf 10. Consequently when either leaf 10 is pulled outwardly it will first separate from the adjacent one of the extension leaves until the dowel pins carried thereby have become disengaged from their sockets in the said extension leaf and further movement of the abutment 30 and as the leaf 10 is further pulled outwardly the adjacent extension leaf from which the leaf 10 is separated, will be correspondingly moved and will be caused to separate from its companion extension leaf or from the other one of the leaves 10 as the case may be. Therefore, when either or both of the leaves 10 is pulled outwardly the extension leaf or leaves will be left in position supported from each other and from the leaves 10 and may be folded without interference on the part of the dowel pins 17 or 26 as the case may be.
It will, of course, be understood that the principles of the invention may be embodied in a round top table equally as well as in a square top table such as shown in the draw- ,ings and that the table may be supported by legs as shown in the drawings whether its top be round or square, or it may be supported by a single pedestal suitably connected with the frame of the table.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In an extension table, a frame, main leaves slidably supported upon the said frame, a plurality of extension leaves mounted within the frame for movement into and out of position for use and when in position for use being arranged to lie between the adjacent edges of the main leaves, an abutment carried by the underside of one of the extension leaves, and a resilient finger carried upon the underside of the adjacent main leaf and arranged to extend beneath the said abutment and provided with a terminal portion spaced from the abutment when the extension leaf or leaves are in position for use and designed to engage against the said abutment when the said extension leaf is moved in a direction away from the said adjacent main leaf.
2. In an extension table, a frame, main leaves slidably supported upon said frame,
a plurality of extension leaves mounted,
within the frame for movement into and out of position for use and when in position for use being arranged to lie between the adj acent edges of the main leaves, an abutment carried by the underside of one of the extension leaves near the edge thereof which is presented toward the adjacent main leaf, and a resilient finger upon the underside of the said adjacent main leaf, the said finger extending beyond the inner edge of the said main leaf, whereby when the extension leaf is in position for use the finger will extend therebeneath and beneath the said abutment, the said finger having an upstanding terminal portion located beyond and in spaced relation-to the abutment when the extension leaf is in'position for use and being arranged to engage the said abutment after the said main leaf has been slidably separated from the said extension leaf.
