ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES Patented November 22, 1904.
PATENT @rrrcie.
TAB-LE.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofLetters Patent No. 775,724, dated November 22, 1904.
Application filed Tune 17, 1904. Serial No. 212,992. (No model.)
To It whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVADE HAMPTON GIBBEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Columbia, in the county of Richland and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Table, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in tables or desks, the object being to provide a table or desk with a longitudinally-movable top, making it particularly useful for bookkeepers, draftsmen, or others, inasmuch as the top, with a large book or drawing-paper thereon, may be moved along to bring the work into proper position for the person sitting at the table, thus obviating the necessity of the person shifting his seat.
I will describe a table embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a section on the line 90 w of Fig. 2 of a table embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line y 3/ of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 2' 2 of Fig. 2.
The frame of the table comprises spaced side rails 1 2, which are connected to the legs 3, and end rails 4 complete the frame. Supported by the side rails are rollers 5, which, as here shown, have bearings in metal straps 6, secured to the inner adjacent sides of the rails 1 2.
Extended outward from the upper edge of the outer rails l are flanges 7, which are slightly below the plane of the rollers 5, so that the table-top 8 may readily move on the rollers. At the sides the top 8 has downwardly-extended rails 9, from which flanges 10 extend inward, and supported on these flanges are rollers 11, which engage against the under side of the flanges 7, these rollers 11, by engaging with the flanges 7, preventing an upward movement of the table-top relatively to the frame.
Either side of the table-top may be provided with a handle 12, and at its center the tabletop has a depending pin 13, designed to engage with the end rail 4 to prevent the top from being wholly slid ofl' the frame.
A table embodying my invention will be found of great service to a bookkeeper employing very large books, because the bookkeeper may practically stand or sit in one position and move the table-top, with the book, along as occasion may require, and obviously the table will be found equally useful for draftsmen or for any class of work requiring under old conditions the shifting of the operator.
Although I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be evident that the latter is not strictly limited to the details and arrangement thereof and that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which is defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A table comprising a leg supported frame, flanges extended outward from the side rails of the frame, rollers supported on the frame, a top resting on said rollers, and rollers carried by thetop and engaging the under sides of said flanges.
2. A table comprising a leg supported frame consisting of spaced side rails and end rails, flanges extending outward from the outer side rails, rollers supported by the side rails, a top resting on said rollers, downwardly-ex tended rails at opposite sides of the top, flanges extended inward from said rails, and rollers supported by said flanges for engaging with the first-named flanges.
' 3. A table comprising a leg supported frame consisting of spaced side rails and end rails, metal straps secured to the inner sides of said side rails, rollers having bearings in sand straps, flanges extended outward from top for engaging with either one of the end 10 ralls.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name the outer side rails, a top resting on said roll- I to this specification in the presence of two subers, rails extended downward from opposite scribing witnesses.
sides of said top, flanges extended inward from said rails, rollers supported on said flanges and engaging with the first-named flanges, and a stop depending from the-under side of the WADE HAMPTON GIBBES. Witnesses:
W. (J. UATHOART, (Jr. SLAVIE COOPER.
