EXTENSION-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,859, dated June 9, 1903.
Application filed March 11, 1903. Serial No. 147,287. (No model.)
equal to the width of the leaf and which rests upon strips E,'several of which are secured to the lower edge of the center slide-rail and extend parallel with the leaves. Located between the said blocks and the slide-rails and extending parallel therewith are two strips F and I-I, which are supported by the strips E, to which they are secured. The upper edge of the strips F are of such height as to be level with the top of the central section of the leaf when the latter is not in use. The strips H are of the same height as the sliderails and have their upper inner corners curved or beveled, as shown in Fig. 4. When the folding leaves are out of use and lie within the frame of the table, they are level with or below the top of the slide-rail, so that the fixed or permanent portions of the table-top may be drawn or pushed together above the folded leaves. To unfold the leaves after the fixed portions of the table -top have been drawn apart, the inner ends of the end sections of the leaves are raised upwardly, and when in a perpendicular position the hinged portion rests upon the top of the strip F, and when pushed outwardly they roll or ride over the beveled surface of the strip H until they assume their extended and horizontal position level with the fixed portions of the table- To all whom if may concern,.-
Be it known thatl, GUS I-l. WOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in extension-tables of the character hereinafter described; and the object of my improvements is to provide extension-leaves made in sections which may be folded together within the frame of the table so that they will lie underneath the fixed top thereof when not in use instead of being removed therefrom and so they may be readily unfolded and form a part of the table-top when it is desired to extend the table. I attain these and other objects by means of the form, arrangement, and combination f parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a top plan view of my improved fable in a closed or non-extended relation. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of same extended, showing one leaf folded and one unfolded and inoperative position. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the table with the unfolded leaf removed therefrom. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional View taken on the line 4- 4 of Fig. 2 on an enlarged scale, and Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the folding leaves and the supplemental frame removed from the table.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A represents the legs of the table, B the extensionslide-rails, and C the two portions of the table-top which are permanently secured to the frame.
The parts thus far enumerated are of the character in general use in ordinary extension-tablesand form no part of my invention proper, which is designed to be applicable to any of the well-known forms of extension-tables. Y
D represents the central section of the threepart folding leaves, and d' the end section of same, which are hinged to the central section with suitable hinges, as d2, so that the end sections may be folded inwardly upon the central section. Secured to the under side of the central section of the folding leaf at each end thereof is a 4block cl3, which in length is top. In the inner edges and near the end of the fixed portions of the iop of the table are arranged spring-bolts K, which project so as to engage openings 11, which are preferably formed in a metal plate L, secured to the adjacent edges of the folding leaves, thus interlocking the adjacent edges of the movable and fixed leaves together when the former are in use. The blocks d3, being secured to the central section of the foldable leaf, raise with it when the leaf is unfolded and prevent the endwise movement thereof, since the lower edge of the blocks always extend below the upper edge of the strips F.
M M represent strips of wood secured to the ends of the strips Fand H and prevent the sidewise movement of the leaves when folded within the supplemental frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent, is
l. In combination with an extension-table, a supplemental frame secured within the ta- ICC ed when unfolded to ride over and be'sup-Y ported on the beveled side rails.
2. In combination With an extension-table,
" a supplemental frame secured Within the table-frame and having fixed beveled side rails parallel with the slide-rails of said tableframe, foldable leaves composed of hinged sections adapted when folded to lie within and be supported by the supplemental frame, and adapted when unfolded to ride over the beveled slide-rails, and means for interlocking the adjacent edges of the unfolded leaves and the fixed portions of the table-top.
3. In combination with an extension-table, a supplemental frame secured Within the table-frame, and having fixed beveled side rails parallel with the slide-rails of said tableframe, foldable leaves composed of hinged sections adapted when folded to lie within and be supported by the supplemental frame, and adapted when unfolded to ride over the beveled side rails and be supported by the slide-rails, spring-bolts arranged in the inner edges and near the outer ends of the fixed p0rtions of the table-top, and adapted to engage side rail and be supported by'the` openings in the adjacent edges of the outer sections of the folding leaves.
4. In combination with an extension-table, a supplemental frame secured Within the table-frame, and comprising beveled side rails, ythe strips E and M and the side rails F, foldable leaves composed of hinged sections adapted when folded to lie within and .be supported by the supplemental frame, and adapted when unfolded to ride over the beveled side rails and be supported by the frame of the table.
5. In combination with an extension-table, asuppleinental frame secured within the table-frame and having beveled side rails, foldable leaves composed of three hinged sections adapted when folded to lie within and be supported by the su pplelnental frame, and adapted when unfolded to ride over the beveled side rails and be supported by the tableframe, blocks secured to and depending from the under side of the ends of the central sections of the leaves, and adapted to prevent the endwise movement of the said leaves.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
