SHOW-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,605, dated February 26, 1889.
Application fil d Aprilllc, 1888. Serial No. 270,664. (No model) To (/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS X. GANTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inl The letter A designates a case comprising a bottom, 11, frame-moldings c, and glass panels (7. The case itself is without partitions or back. It may have any desired shape or dimension, and is designed to inclose a displaystand, as hereinafter described.
The bottom I: of theease has straight guidestrips 6 extending across, which serve to guide the movable shelf-sections G C 0 which are entered at the open back and shoved forward into the case.
The display racks and shelves are made up into movable sections-in the present instance three sections, C C (I -and either of these is wholly removable from the case A. The ctmsiruetimi of the sections is as follows: Referring to the first section, C, two
vertical side walls, f, are connected at the front by shelves D, which recede from the base upward, and risers g, closing the space bet-ween the shelves and forming a displaystand like steps. The risers may be perpendicular, as shown in the first section, 0, or may be slightly inclined, as shown in the third section, 0 They maybe covered with cloth, plain glass, or with a glass mirror. The space between the two side walls, f, is divided by horizontal strips or partitions 72 into compartments open at the rear, and drawers F occupy the compartments. It will be seen the risers g between the shelves close the compartments at the front, and neither the drawers nor the contents of the drawers can be seen from the front. Each section is provided on its base with guide-strips e and rollers i to facilitate its movement in and out of the case, and 011 the lower back edge with a flange-strip, 7.1, which projects downward and conceals the rollers when the section is in the case. Suitable handles, Z, at the back of each section afford means for pulling the sections out.
Instead of drawers F in the compartments, the latter may be closed at the rear side, wholly or partly, by doors G, as shown in section C Fig. 2.
By this construction the case A is provided with a display-stand composed of shelves D receding like steps, and the space below and back of the shelves provides for drawers F, or compartments, each of which is separately accessible without disturbing the displaystand; and as the said display-stand and drawers are comprised in one construction 01' section and provided with rollers, and the case provided with guides 61 for the said section, the latter as a whole may be withdrawn partly or wholly from the case to give access to the shelves D of the display-stand.
The bottom I) of the show-case A has at its back edge notches z" to receive the rollers on the base of the display-stand. By this arrangement the display-stands may be shoved into the case A, so as to bring the lower flangestrip, it, close to the edge bottom and have the top baclgp, of the stand close the open back of the case.
A stand for the display of canes or u mbrellas is shown in the second section, C. Here the top shelves, D, are provided with holes or for the canes, the lower ends of which rest on a base-shelf, 0. In other respects this cancstand is constructed same as the one before described.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination, in a showcase, of an external case, A, having glass panels 0, the removable sections C C C", having steplike shelves in front for the display of goods, and the drawers F, located in said sections and adapted to be withdrawn from the same at the rear, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the casing A, of the removable sections having step -1ike shelves in front, internal recesses provided with drawers F, and doors G at the rear for closing said recesses, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
FRANCIS X. GANTER.
