WILLIAM SMITH, OF GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.
TYPE-CASE FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,055, dated August 6, 1895. Application filed October 1l 1894:. Serial No. 524,639. (No model.) Patented in England July 3, 1894,1T0.12.344y
To @ZZ whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, WTLLIAM SMITH, of 198a St. Vincent Street, Glasgow, in the county of Lanark, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful improvements in and connected with frames, cabinets, boxes, and like movable and stationary repositories in which typecases,- trays, drawers, and analogous sliding receptacles are used, (and for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Great Britain No. 12,844, dated July 3, 1894;) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, Vsuch as will euableothers skilled inthe art to which it appertains'to make and use the same.
Although this invention vhas for its object to construct an in finite variety of repositories for containing sliding receptacles so as to economize space and dispense with nails, screws, bolts, and analogous fastenings, I shall for brevity confine myself, by way of example, to a priuters frame for containing type-cases, as the mode ot' construction is the same in all its applications.
By the arrangement herein described I am enabled to increase the accommodation for type-cases and analogous receptacles to a very considerable extent, which forms a very important feature in my improvements.
Figurel is'a front elevation, partly in section, of a frame for containing type-cases made in accordance with and constituting my invention. Fig. 2 is a part transverse section. Fig. 3 is a part horizontal section of the same, and Fig. 4 is a plan of a runner or side bar drawnto an enlarged scale, and herein after more fully described.
In carrying my invention into practice the said iron bars or runners are marked A, and
extend from the front to the rear of the frame marked B. The said runners or side bars A on which the type-cases C slide are constructed and fixed in position in the following manner: At the front and back of each cial feature of my improvements.
Baforesaid The said side bars or runners A are built up in such a manner (reference being had to Fig. I of the drawings) that the lateral extensions of each side bar or runner Y a rests or lies upon that of its adjacent bar or runner, and thereby constitutes the re-` spective rows of shelves D for the type-cases without the use of any kind of fastening to keep them in position, which is another espe- A continnous line of metal, due to such an arrangement, is formed on both sides ofthe frame B, which in hot or tropical climates will serve to counteract any tendency to the warping of the said frame. The top of the frame B is surmouuted with a pair of brackets E for holding two type-cases, the upper one of which overlapping, to a small extent, thatof the lower case for the convenience of the compositor and to economizespace.
I claim- In a type-case cabinet, the combination with the frame having an upright B at each of the fourcorners thereof, the pair of uprights at each end being provided with vertical grooves (r2-a2 facing each other and extending from top to bottom of'said uprights; of a plurality of supports each consisting of the metal runner A having Iianges or distance-pieces a-a and rectangular transverse lugs a-a integral with said runner; the said lugs on each runner fitting in the slots in the end uprights A,-A, and the said flanges on each runner abutting against the flanges of the runner next above or below, and being of the desired width for separating the type-case supports sufciently to allow the said type-cases to enter between said supports, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' WILLIAM SMITI-I.
