METALLIC FILING-CASE- Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, ERIK L. KRAG, acitizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Filing-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is the production of a metallic filing-case having verticallyadjustable shelves, with a secure and convenient means for supporting and changing the position of said shelves.
The invention further has regard to the general construction and arrangement of the parts of a filing-case.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a filing-case embodying Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on dotted line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on dotted line 3 3 of Eig. l. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of one of the shelves in the lower part of the case.
This improved cabinet comprises a base A, sides B, a back C, and a top D. Two vertical supporting-bars E are secured to the inner faces of the sides B at a little distance from their forward edges and slightly offset from said sides. These vertical supporting-bars have oblique notches or pockets E/ for supporting the shelves, as will hereinafter more fully appear. The inner faces of the back C are also provided with two vertical supporting-bars E, having openings E, lying' in the same horizontal plane with the lower portion of the pockets E', intended for supporting the same shelf.
Two forms of shelf are provided-one, G, for supporting books (illustrated in Eig. 3) and the other, H, for supporting drawers. Each of the shelves G is provided with an outer rectangular framework G, having a rectangular rentrant portion G2 in said framework, providing' an opening for the hand of the person taking a book from the' shelf. Rollers G3 are provided, upon which the book rests and which rotate to permit it to be slid easily into place upon the shelf. Studs Gi project outwardly from opposite sides of the framework and are adapted to enter the oblique pockets E. Two other studs G5 project rearwardly from the shelf G in position to enter the openings F of the vertical supportingbar E, the shelf being supported upon said studs G4 and G5, lying in the pockets E and E', respectively.
The shelf H comprises a sheet-metal top H', bent at its forward and rear edges over rods H2 and H3. The ends of the rod H2 at the forward edge of the shelf project from each side of the top H' thereof a suflicient distance to enter the oblique pockets E and support the forward edge of the shelf. Studs H1 are secured to the rear rod H3 in proper position to enter .the openings E' in the vertical bars E and support the rear edge of the shelf.
The shelves are withdrawn by raising the forward edge and withdrawing the studs G4 (or the ends of the rod H2 in the case of the shelf H) from thel pockets E. This pulls the shelf forward and withdraws the studs G5 (or those H4) from the openings E in the vertical supporting bars F. The shelves may be placed at any desired distance apart within the range of adjustment of the case.
It is apparent that the filing-case herein described may be made of sufcient width to accommodate two or more tiers of shelves, supporting-bars being provided between adjacent tiers, that the rear supporting-bar may be provided with notches or projections for holding the rear edges of the shelves, and that many other changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. I therefore desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise details hereinset forth.
I claim as my invention- In a filing-cabinet, in combination, a casing comprising two sides and a back; a single vertical supporting-bar secured to the inner face of each of said sides near the forward edge thereof, said bars having therein a series of oblique pockets opening toward the forward side of the cabinet; two vertical supportingbars spaced apart and secured upon the inner face of said back, said bars having' therein a within the openings in the su'pportingbars se; series of openings vertically alined with the Cured to the back. pockets of the side supporting-bars; and a shelf having upon each oi' yits ends near its forward edge a stud adapted to lie in the Witnesses: pockets of the side supporting-bars and hav- FREDK.
