CBENET.
SPECIFCATON forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,434, dated October 13, 1903.
Application letl Juno 18, 1903. Serial No. 162.124. (No model.)
T0 cir/ZZ whom] it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT T. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ster ling, in the county of Rice and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same My invention relates to new and useful improvements in display-cabincts of that class having tilting shelvesor trays.
The object of the invention is to improve and simplify the construction of devices of this characterand render them more durable in use and less expensive to manufacture.
With this and other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as vwill be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure It is a perspective view of a cabinet constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the shelves or trays removed from the cabinet.
In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated in the drawings, l denotes a suitable frame or casing having its front 2 formed with a vertical series of openings Soto receive shelves or trays 4.-. Each of said shelves cornprises a bottom 5, a front 6, which is secured to the bottom at right angles, and triangularshaped ends 7, which connect and brace the bottom and'front of the shelf. One of said ends -7 is provided with a stop 8, preferably in the form of an integral inverted-V-sha'ped shoulder, the purpose of which will be hereinafter explained. Secured to the under side of the bottom is a stop 9 in the form of a longitudinal cleat or block, which is adapted to limit the outward sliding movement of the shelf, as hereinafter described. Upon the outside of the front G a suitable handle or handles 9 are secured, and a label or card holder 10 may also be secured to each shelf. These shelves or trays are adapted to have a sliding and tilting movement in the casing or cabinet, and to permit this guide bars or rails 11 are provided in the casing at each side of the openings 3, upon which the bottoms 5 of the shelves are supported and'slide. When a shelf is pulled out, its bottom will slide upon said guides until the stop 9 abuts against the innerside of the front 2 of the casing, when the weight of the contents of the shelf will tilt the same forwardly. As the rear or back portion of the bottom of the shelf is elevated the stop 8 upon one of the ends 7 will engage the inner side of the front 2, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings,I and the shelf will be thus supported or locked in its inclined position. `In order to limit the rearward or inward movement of the shelves, suitable stops 12 are provided upon the rear of theends of the casing.
. By constructing the shelves or trays as previously described the goods or merchandise upon the same may be readily and conveniently displayed. By providing but one stopshoulder 8 upon one end of the shelf and one cleat or block 9 upon theA bottom of the same a very simple yet efficient shelf of the character described is produced, and it will be observed that the same 'may be manufactured at very small cost.
While I have illustrated four shelves arranged in a vertical row, it will be understood that any desired number of shelves may be thus arranged, and the cabinet may be built with any desired number of vertical rows of shelves. The cabinets may also be constructed single, as illustrated in the drawings, in which case they are adapted to be placed along the walls of a store or business room, or they may be constructed double, with shelves or trays upon each side to adapt them to be placed in the center of the room.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, `and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ism
ICO
l. In combination With an inclosing case or cabinet having suit-able guides and a rear stop, a shelf or tray slidable on said guides and provided with a bottom stop to limit its outward-sliding movement, and a V-shaped contact-piece carried by said shelf, one of the inclined sides of which is adapted to engage the front wall of the case to limit the tilting movement of the opened shelf, and another inclined Wall t0 engage the rear stop to limit the closing movement of said shelf, substantially as described.
2. In combination With an inclosing oase or cabinet, having suitable guides and a rear stop, a shelf or tray slidable on said guides, and comprising a bottom, a front Wall disposed at right angles thereto, and triangular'- shaped side Walls, a transverse stop upon the bottom of the shelf to engage the lfront wall of the case to limit the outward-sliding movement of the shelf, and a triangular-shaped con tact-piece secured to one of the triangular side walls of the shell", one of the inclined sides of said Contact-piece being forwardly directed to engage the front wall of the case and limit the tilting movement of the opened shelf and another of the inclined sides thereof being rearwardly directed and adapted to engage the rear stop to limit the closing movement of said shelf, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ROBERT T. ANDERSON.
