SHOW-CASE FOR CIGARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 7, 1911.
Application filed November 19, 1908. Serial No. 463,344.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST LANGE, a citizen of the ,United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Show-Case for Cigars, of which the following is a specification.
The principal objects of the present invention are to provide a show case in which cigal-s are attractively displayed in their original boxes and from which theymay be conveniently presented, in their original boxes and without handling, to the customers who may choose and themselves take out of the boxes the cigars selected; and to provide' such a show case with convenient locking means.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawings, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view illustratin a show case embodying features of the invention. Fig. 2, is a sectional View of one of the drawers,-drawn to an enlarged scale, and illustrating means for locking the drawer, and Fig. 3, is a sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
The case is provided with a bottom wall 1,
' end walls 2, and a top wall 3. The latter should be transparent, and the end walls may or may not be transparent, as desired. The bottom wall may be of any construction desired. The case has openings at its back and front. This follows from the fact that it consists of top, bottom and vertical walls.
There are drawers each having a transparent front wall 4, a bottom wall 5, side walls 6 and an end or back wall 7. The drawers are, as to shape and size, adapted to hold cigar boxes and they are arranged in the case and adapted to be pushed from the rear through the case so as to project their' open tops at the front of the case, as shown in Fig. 1.
When the drawers are in retracted position in the case the contents of the open cigar boxes is visible tirough the transparent top of the case and transparent end 4 of the drawers; thus a customer by looking at the case may make his selection, the salesman then pushes the drawer containing the cigar selected forward through the case and the customer takes the cigar selected and the attendant may then retract thedrawer. In this way the cigars are handled only by the customer and the attendant in no case is required to put cigars back in the box, which as is well known, he is not permitted to do. The front walls 4 are inclined upward and backward thus affording a good view of the contents of the drawers. The device is therefore not only an attractive means for showing and selling cigars, but also an arrangement by which the cigar dealer may not inadvertently be called upon to put back cigars once taken out of the box by the customer.
8, is a spring-catch notched to engage a projection 9 on the bottom wall of the case.
10, is a handle for raising the catch to clear the projection 9 and thus permit of free movement of the drawer.
11, is a pivotal spring retract-ed locking plate, bifurcated to straddle the catch 8 and provided with a projection 12 for engaging and disengaging the catch.
13, is a knob for turning the locking plate so as to lock and release the catch 8.
The described locking means serves to lock the drawers against motion either toward the front or back of the case and at the same time by simply turning the knob 13 and lift ing the handle, it is possible to move the drawers as desired.
\Vhat I claim is,
The combination of a show case open at its back and front, open top drawers arranged in the case and movable through the openings in the case, a spring catch having a handle arranged at the rear of the drawer, notch-and-projection connection between the catch and case, and a pivotal spring locking plate adapted to engage and disengage the catch and provided with an operating knob, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
AUGUST LANGE.
