UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONY VARD, OF BROOKLYN, NhV YORK.
MUSICAL CIGAR SHOW-BOX.
:SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,986, dated June 1, 1886.
Serial No. 172,800. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY VARD, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State oi' New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Musical Cigar SliowBoXes,of which the following` is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ol' this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the ligures.
Figure l is a sectional frontelevation ofone olmy musical cigar show-boxes taken through theliue .fr zr, Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation ol' the same, taken through the line g/ y, Fig. l. Fig. fl is a sectional end elevation ofthe same, taken through the line .z c, Figzl.. Fig. 4 is a plan view ol a part of the same, the cover being` removed.
The object oi' this invention is to provide attractive showboxes l'or offering cigars to customers.
The invention consists in a musical cigar show-box made with grooves in the inner surfaces ol' its :front and rear sides, and provided with removable partitions, and a musiebox so arranged that the music will be started and stopped by opening and closing the show-box cover, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then claimed.
A represents the body of the show-boX, which is made with its iront a little lower than its baclr,to give the cover B a downward inclination. rlhe box A. ismade of such a width that a cigar-box, can be readily placed within it ofa depth, a little greater than the depth of a cigar-box, and of a length so much greater than the length ol the cigar-box C as to leave at one cud oll the said cigar-boxsuliicient space to receive a small music-box, D.
In the inner surfaces ofthe front and back of the showbox A are formed vertical grooves E F, to receive the edges of the partitions Gr H. The grooves E are so located as to be at the end ol the cigar-box C,so that the partition G, when placed in the said grooves E, will be directly above, and its lower edge will rest upon the upper edge of, the inner end ofthe cigarbox C. Several pairs ol'grooves,F,areibrmed, so that one or more partitions, H, can be used, as may be desired.
The lower parts of the side edges of thepartwo compartments, so that different brands of 6o cigars can be placed in the said compartments, an d will be entirely separated from each other.
One,two, or more, partitions,H, can be used as the number ol` different brands of cigars to be placed in the cigaihbox C may require. lilith this construction the cigar-box C can be removed from the show-box B by taking outthe partitions G H; or the cigar-box O and the partition H can be taken out together when required.
To the center ol the rear side of the showbox A is attached a handle, l', for convenience in handling the said showbox.
ln the end ofthe show-box A, adjacent to the end of the music-box D, is formed a perioraton, in which is placed a rod, J. Upon the lower end of the rod J is formed an inwardly-projecting arm, K, which, when the rod J is l'orced downward, is brought into contact with the cscapemeut L of the driving mechanism of the music-box D, and holds the said mechanism from operating'. Upon the lower part of the rod J is placed a spiral spring, lll, the upper end of which rests against a collar, N, formed upon or attached to the said rod J. rllhe spring lll is made of suilicient strength to raise the rod J when left free, aud thus withdraw the arm K from the esca-pement L, and thus allow the music-box D to play. \Vith this construction, when the cover B is closed it rests upon the upper end of the rod J, and its weight depresses the said rod and holds the arm K in gear with the escapement L. Vhen the cover l, is raised, the spring M raises the rod J and withdraws the arm K from the escapement L, allowing the music box to play, so that the music will be started by opening the cover B and stopped by closing the said cover.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a musical cigar show-box, the combination, with the show-box having' a cover, B,
IOO
and provided with a handle, I, and groovesE stantially as herein shown and described, F, of the cigar-box C, and the parbitionsG H, whereby the music will be startedy and stopped 1o placed in the said grooves, substantially as by the opening and closing of the show-box /herein shown and described. cover, as set forth. 5 2. In a. musical cigar show-box, the combi- ANTHONY VARD.
nation, with the show-box A and its cover B, WVitnesses: and the music-box escapement L, of the rod J JAMES T. GRAHAM,
having arm K, and the spiral spring M, sub- EDGAR TATE.
