PATENT OFFICE.
.IOHN B. FREDERICK, OF NEW KENSINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
MATCH-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 705,578, dated uly 29, 1902.
Application ma Deeemberii, `1991. serai No". 85.432. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. FREDERICK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Kensington, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in match-boxes, andrelates more particularly to that class wherein one match is delivered at a time. n
The present invention may be constructed so as to conform to the pocket or it may be made upon a larger scale and used in public places where a `large number of `matches are constantly used; f i
Another objectof the present invention is to construct a matchbox of the above-described character that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, and coinparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a match-box wherein the opening through which the matches are discharged is always normally closed; furthermore, to provide a box that may be easily filled or loadedwith matches when desired.
With the above and other objects linlview the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, formin ga part of this speciticatiomand wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughoutthe several views,in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved match-box. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, showing thehinged cover or lid open. Fig. 3 isavertical sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 looking in the direc-` taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 5 is alike view taken on the line 5 5 of Figs.'2 and`3 'looking in the direction of the arrow, as indicated in Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the guide to discharge the matches. Fig. 7 is a in proper position.
front elevation of a portion of the box, showingthedischarge-guide in vertical section and clearly illustrating the openings formed in the front of the box for the discharge of the matches. Y
In the `drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates a rectangular box, said box having hinged thereto at 2 2 the lid or cover 3, said cover carrying at its forward end the lip 4. In the said box 1 is formed an elongated slot 5 in the side thereof, and in the front of said the side andthe wall of the partition.
The reference-numeral12 indicates a guide for the discharge ofthe matches, said guide comprising a casing 14, in which is secured a spiral spring 15, attached at 16 to the guide and at 17 to the box. The said guide 12 has also formed therein an elongated slot 18, through which extends a lug 19, formed upon the inner face of Athebox, which servsnto limit the movement of the guide and to retain the same The said guide 12 also carries a forward extension 20,which extends through the slot 6, the outer end of said extension being bent at right angles, as shown at' 21, to receive the operating-knob 22. The
lside of theguide 12 also carries nan, operating-knob23, the shank 24 of which passes throughI the slot 5, formed in the side of the box.
The reference-numeral 25 represents an inwardly-extending heel, formed integral with the inner face of the guide, which is of only sufcient length to engage the end of one match, this heel serving to discharge the match from the box.
The detailed operation; of:` improved match-box is as follows: The matches'being placed in position in the box, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the knob 22 or 23 is operated, the heel of the guide engaging a single match, drawing the same forwardly through IOO the opening 7, formed in the forward side of the box, when it may be easily grasped and removed therefrom. As either of the operating-knobs is released the contraction of the spiral spring 15 will serve to operate the guide to its normal position, thereby closing the opening 7 by reason of the angular extension 2l abutting against the outer face of the box. The lug 19, extending through the slot 1S, serves to perfectly retain the guide in position as it is operated. Itwill be seen that by reason of the partition 9 and the space 10, formed thereby, only one row of matches will be allowed to be fed into the space formed by the partition and the heel of the guide being of such length that the same will only engage one match at a time and will assure the free and easy discharge of a single match, as will be readily understood.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved match-box will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a match-box, the combination with a receptacle having a partition therein, secured to the ends thereof, with a space between the lower edge of the partition and the bottom of the receptacle, a spring-actuated guide comprising a casing, one side of which has an elongated slot therein, with a lug carried by one side of the receptacle, and being received in said slot, the other side of said casing engaging the one side of the partition With the top of the casing engaging the upper end of the partition, the rear edge of the casing carrying a lug for engagement with a single match, the end of the receptacle having an opening therein, for theY passage of a match, an extension carried by the front end of the casing and operating through the said end of the receptacle, and carrying a knob for operating the guide-casing, substantially as described.
2. In a match-box, the combination with a receptacle having a partition secured therein, with aspace between its lower edge and the bottom of the receptacle, a spring-actuated guide comprising a casin g carrying an eXtension on its one end operating through an opening provided therefor, in the end of the receptacle and carrying a knob for operating the guide, the guide-casing engaging the partition, and means carried by the guide-casing for engagement with a match to eject the latter when the knob is operated, substantially as described.
3. In a match-box, the combination with a receptacle having a partition secured by its ends to the ends of the receptacle and having a space between its lower edge and the bottom of the receptacle, a guide comprising a casin g carrying an extension operating through the front end of the box in an opening provided therefor, the casing having a top with walls on each side thereof engaging the inner face of one. side of the casing, and the one side of the partition, ,a spring secured to the end of the boX and the one wall of the casing, the front end of said extension carrying means for operating the casing and for closing the opening provided for the ejection of the match, and a lug for engagement with the match to eject the same, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN B. FREDERICK.
