No. 108,346. Patented 001:. 18, 1870.
dint-ted tatea I CHARLES GOL DTHWAIT, OF SOUTH WEYMOUTH, MASSAGEUSE'JPTS.
Letters Patent No. 108,346, dated October 18, 1870; antedated October 8, 1870.
IMPROVEMENTJN MATCH-SAFES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part Of t Same- To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES GOLDTHWAL'T, of South \Veymouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Match-Safe; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improve.- ment in boxes or safes for holding matches, and consists in forming a box or safe with separate compartments, and provided with igniting-snrfitoes, and so as tohe tightly closed when not inuse, as will be herei natter more fully described.
Fill the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a top view, with the cover oif.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of fig. 1, on the line a: .12.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the box, constructed with a large central compartment for containing the cards of matches, as seen in the drawing, placed with the ignitible ends projecting up above the ignitingsnrfitces B B, so that the matches may be removed (either a card ora single match) without difficulty.
'0 represents the compartment for cards of matches. DD are compartments for holding single matches or small portions of a card of matches, so that they may be readily removed from the safe for use.
One of these compartments may be used for containing the stubs of matches, thus preventing accidents from fire by partially-extinguished matches thrown upon the floor or among combustible materials.
E is the cover, which is made to close tightly, and keep the matches perfectly safe.
This is a cheap and simple arrangement, perfectly safe, and very convenient for traveling, as well as for domestic purposes.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The match-safe A, constructed with the-cover E,
compartments 0 and D D, and the friction-surface B B, and arranged to hold the matches in an upright position, substantially as shown and described.
Vitnesses: CHARLES GOLDTHWAIT.
