Be it known that 1, `lEnRuNoz JOACHIM, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Pullman, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new anduseful improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the acompanying drawino.

This invention relates to receptacles, particularly designed for receiving jewelry, and has for its object to provide a receptacle for the purpose set forth, with means in a manner as hereinafter set forth, to provide a concealed lock so that one, unless they were familiar with the receptacle could not open the latter and would be compelled to utilize a large amount. of time to ascertain how access could be had to the interior of the receptacle.

Further objects of the invention are to provide a receptacle having the appearance of a stack of books and which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, eihcient and convenient in its use, readily set up and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With the foregoing and other objects 1n view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to beunderstood that changes, variations and modications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

In the drawings whereinv like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the receptacle in an inverted position and with the bottom shifted and the lock concealing member removed, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, broken away, through the bottom portion of the receptacle, the latter being in an inverted position and further showing in dotted lines the position of the bottom when shifted, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the receptacle, the latter being inverted and the bottom shifted.

The drawings illustrate the receptacle in an inverted position so that the elements which constitute the receptacle can be more clearly illustrated especially with respect to the construction and arrangement of the bottom.

The receptacle comprises a body portion formed of a rear wall 4, a front wall 5, and a top 6 which is hinged as at 7 to the upperend of the rear wall 4 and a bottom consistl'ng of an inner section 8, an intermediate section 9 and an outer section 10. The inner and intermediate sections of the bottom are secured to the front and rear walls 4 and 5 respectively, these latter being beveled as at 11 and against said beveled portion is secured an intermediate section 9. The inner section 8 is positioned between the walls 4 and 5, and fixedly secured to the intermediate section 9. The body portion further includes a pair of end walls 11 and 12, against which is positioned the section 8. The intermediate section 9 is provided with a pair of longitudinally extending dove- tailed grooves 13 and 14, and mounted in each of said grooves is a dove-tailed slide 15, of a length less than one half the length of its respective groove and the said slides 15 are xedly secured by the holdfast devices 16, to the section 10, the latter not only slides upon the intermediate section 9, but furthermore slides upon the facing 17 for the end walls, the facing 18 of the rear wall and the facing 19 of the front wall. The top 6 of the receptacle is constructed to resemble a book and the section 1() is constructed also 'to resemble a book, and said top 6 is of the same length and width as the said section 10. The front wall 5'is recessed as at 20 and in said recess is positioned a lock 21, the bolt 22 of which is adapted to engage in a keeper 23 carried by the top 6. The front wall 6 of the body portion is provided with a key-hole opening 24. The facing of the rear wall 4 is constructed to give the appearance of a plurality of books and the facing 19 for the front wall 5 consists of a series of members giving the appearance of the backs of a series of books. The members which form the facinfT 19 are arranged parallel and all of them with the exception of one is Xedly secured to the front wall 5. The loose member of the facing 19 is termed a lock concealing member and is indicated by the ref erence character 25. The said member 25 is maintained in position in engagement with the top 6 and bottom 10. Whensaid section 10 is in normal position, such positio-n being the complete closing of the slots vio 13, and la the section 1() will lbe eXactly over the section 6. Then the member 25 is in position, the front of the receptacle will appear as a row of books mountedupon a single book and having a single book upon the top thereof. 7When it is desired to obtainraccess to the receptacle, the latter is in'- verted and the section 10 shifted to the position as shown in Fig. l. The member 25 is then removed to expose the keyhole opening after which the position of the receptacle is reversed, and the lock released from (the top 6, the latter can then vbe elevated and access had tothe top of the receptacle. The inner "section 8 extends at aniiiclination and the slides vl5 slightly wedge-shaped whereby when the section l0 is shifted to normal position as illustrated in full lines inFig. 2, the slides l5 will wedge between the walls of the slots 13 and 14C, and under such conditions prevent accidental shifting of the section 10.

What I claim is l. A receptacle comprising a body portion including front and rear walls, end walls and a top and bottom, said top hinged to the rear wall, a lock carried by the front wall and adapted to engage in said top for locking it in closed position, said front wall having a key-hole opening associated with said lock, said bottom including a shiftable "shiftable section.
