MATCH-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 647,955, dated April 24, 1900.
Application filed August 19,1899. Serial No. 727,778. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NIELS OLE F'O'NSSKOV, a citizen of the United States, residing at Perth Amboy, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented anew and useful Match-Box, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the general class of match-boxes, but more particularly to those known as the sin gle-delivery type, and has for its objects to provide a device of the kind described which will be cheap, durable, and consist of a minimum number of parts, dispensing with springs and like mechanism common to this class of devices and which are continually getting out of order.
With these objects in view my invention consists in a match-receptacle containing a combination of parts and details of construction, all of which will be referred to in the following description, recited in the claims, and illustrated in the drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a matchbox constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the line 3 3, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the interior of the box, the top and followers being removed.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings by reference-numerals, 5 indicates the box or casing divided into a rear compartment 6 (in which the operating mechanism is located) by a transverse partition 7 and two match-retaining compartments 8 and 9 by a partition 10. Each of these compartments 8 and 9 is provided with a supplemental bottom 12, having walls 12, inclined from the partition 10 to about the center thereof, and inclined walls 12 terminating at a higher plane than the walls 12 and connected thereto by a vertical wall 12, forming a longitudinally-arranged groove 13 at their juncture registering with an opening 14 in the front wall of the casing. Secured on either side of these openings are the converging yielding lingers 15 and 16, roughened on their inner surfaces to form igniting-surfaces for the head of the match.
Suspended from the top or lid 17 by suitable flexible connections 18 and 19 are the followers 20,which rest upon the matches and force them down upon the inclined walls of the supplemental bottom 12,so that one match will always rest in the grooves 13.
The partition 7 is provided with a slotted opening 21,adjacent to each end in horizontal alinement with the grooves 13, through which project the fingers 22 of the sliding blocks 23, connected to the slotted end of the bell-crank levers 24E byapin 25, which projects into the slot 26 at the lower end of said levers. These levers are f ulcrumed on the inwardly-projecting pins 26 and have their short arms also slotted, said slotted end being engaged by a pin or projection 27 on the pusher-rods 28, which are provided with beads 30 and which project through the top of the box or casing.
Immediately in front of partitions 7 are slides 7*, having openings 7 of about the size of the fingers 22, thus effectually preventing any matches from getting into the rear compartment, in which the operating mechanism is located.
Pivoted intermediate its ends to a pin 31 is a transverse rod orlever 32, the ends of which project underneath, but in close proximity to, the short arms of the levers 24, so that when one of the pusher-rods is actuated to depress the short arm of the bell-crank levers 24 the remaining pusher-rod will be raised, and as soon as the raised pusher-rod is depressed the rod that was depressed will be correspondingly raised. Thus it will be seen that one of the pusher-rods will always be depressed and one always be raised, and an equal distribution of matches from each receptacle will thus take place.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a match-box, the combination with a casing provided with three compartments, two of which are for matches and each is provided with a suspended weight, and the other one contains the operating mechanism, said mechanism comprising two pivoted levers, a push-rod and a sliding block secured to the opposite ends ofeach lever, a finger on each block to project into the match-compartment,
the casing in position to be engaged at its 5 with a push-rod and two slides adjacent to opposite ends by said levers, snbstantiallyas the perforated partition, each of which is prodescribed. vided with a perforation of a sufficient size to 2. In a match-box, the combination with a permit the passage of one of the fingers and [5 5 casing provided with two partitions, one of registering with the perforation in the partited perforation and the other one extends laterally from one side thereof between said perforations, two pivoted levers, each of to which is provided with a finger in position to pass through one of said perforations and NIELS OLE FoNssKov.
