COMBINED TOBACCO AND MATCH BOX.
APPLICATION FILED MAYJO, 913. 3

COMBINED 'rosncoo am) MATCH Box.
. mssaso.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, THOMS F. SAMUEL and JOSEPH H. Wonco'r'r, citizens of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county .of Thomas and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Tobacco and Match Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a combined tobacco and match box.
The invention embodies, among other fea tures, the provision of a match box in which matches can be individually removed therefrom and also'comprehends a tobacco box for use in connection with the match box and which, when attached thereto, constitutes a part thereof.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings,
constituting a part of this specification, in whichsimilar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combined tobacco box and 'match box, parts being broken away to disclose "the underlying structure; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken through the operating mechanism of the match box; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken through the interior of the match box.
Referring more particularly to the views, we disclose a casing 10 divided by a vertical partition llinto a plurality of comparte5 ments l2 and 13, a lid 14 being provided for the casing 10 to close the compartment 12, the said lid preferably being arranged for sliding engagement with the casing 10, as shown and provided in order that a number of matches 15 can be readily arranged in bulk within the compartment 12, an inclined floor 16 being arranged in the compartment 12 and upon which the matches are adapted to be received so that they will gravitate toward a longitudinal slot 17 formed in the front wall of the compartment 12 as shown.
A roller 18 is journaled in the compartment 12 to normally close the-slot 17, the said roller being provided with a longitudinal groove 19 of sufficient width to accommodate a single match, with the said groove normally out of registration with the slot '17 and lying within the compartment 12 so that when the matches 15 are arranged therein and gravitate down the inclined floor Specification o5, 1,,etters Patent.
Application filed May 10, 1913.
sj ecting through the partition Patented May 11, 1915.
Serial No. 766,770.
16, one of the matches will be received in the groove 19 of the roller 18. The roller 18 at one end thereof carries a stud 20 proand keyed on the projecting end of the stud 20 is a disk 21 having secured thereto one end of a contractile spring 22 arranged in the compartment 13 and having the other end thereof secured to a wall of the compartment. A
said lever terminating in a finger piece 25 normally lying flush with the top of the compartment 13 and constituting a portion of the wall thereof.
Now it will be readily apparent thatwhen a downward pressure is exerted on the finger piece 25 rotation will be imparted to the disk 21 and which will be actuated against the contractile action of the spring 22, thus imparting rotation to the roller 18 to move the groove 19 into registration with the slot 17 so that the single match contained in the groove will fall throughthe slot and exteriorly of the compartment 12 containing the matches. Vv'hen the downward pressure on the finger piece 25 is released the action of the springwill return the roller 18 to normal position so that another match in the compartment 12 will gravitate into the groove of the roller, the roller when in normal position being adapted to close the slot 17 to pre ent the accidental displacement of matches from the compartment 12, as will be readily understood.
The rear face 26 of the casing 10 terminates at the upper and lower edges in longitudinal beads 27 forming guideways for a tobacco casing 28 and which has edges 29 thereof grooved to receive the beads 27 when the casing 28 is engaged with the casing 10 so that the tobacco casing 28 can be slid into engagement with the casing 10 and closed by the rear face 26 of the casing 10 forming a wall or cover for tlietobacco casing 28, as will be readily apparent by referring to the views. When it is desired to remove tobacco from the tobacco casing 28 it is only necessary to slide the same slightly outwardly at one end of the, casing 10 and it the said slot and provided with a longitudinal groove adapted to register with the slot for ejecting matches through the slot, the said matches being contained on the said inclined floor, a stud projecting from one end of the roller and into the other compartment, a disk carried by the stud, a contractile spring having connection with the disk and with the casing for normally holding the roller in normal position to close the slot, a lever having pivotal connection with the said disk for imparting rotation to the roller to move the groove thereof into reg1stra'tion with the slot, and a finger piece projecting through an opening in a-wall of the second compartment, with the said finger piece carried by the said lever and normally lying flush with the wall. of the second compartment to constitute a portion thereof.
In testimony whereof'we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
