SECTIONAL FuR vITURE.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDITH LINCOLN NrLns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Delaware, in the county of Delaware and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Furniture, of which the following is. a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sectional or unit interlocking furniture.
The object of' my "invention is to provide sectional furniture adapted to be used;
as a chiflonnier, writingdesk, cupboard, or other increased or decreased in size according to the requirements of the users, or' according to the available space in which it may be placed, or which may be composed of any combination of sections depending upon their particular uses. This is important in small apartments where it is necessary to utilize all available space. An advantage of the invention is the convenience and ease with which it can be built up or moved from one place to another. It enables the user to procure the exact accommodations required as each unit may be selected because of its distinctive use and all of the units are so constructed as to be readily and easily detachably combined with, the other units with which they are used.
The invention consists in a plurality of readily detachable units adapted to be interlocked in vertical position relative to each other. My invention also consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the parts, substantially as set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a piece of sectional furniture embodying my invention, composed of sections built to render the piece usable as a combination chiffonnier, writing desk and cupboard; and
Fig. 2 is a fragmental sectional view of my improved sectional furniture embodying a modified form of construction.
In my improved construction, the piece of furniture it is desired to construct, is built up of a series of sections 3, 4, 5 or any d1fferent or additional sections it may be desirable to employ to complete the piece. In the construction of each section the ends are provided at their upper edges with lugs 6 which are preferably located centrally of theedge and are located to occupy recesses general combination which can be p wam e t. or sockets 7 in the lower edge of each superimposed section, the top-8 being recessed at tion: In-'this'form the upper edge of each I have shown a modified form of section lock embodying-my -inven-- end of each section is'curved, the top of the curved end being provided with alug as in the previously described construction, Fig. 1 showing the modified form in broken curved lines-'14." [In both forms oi 'the' invention shown in the'drawing it will be seen that the floor boards 17 are notched as well as the ends of the sections to receive the lugs 6. By this means the sections are prevented from end and lateral slipping with relation to one another, thus aiding greatly in the interlocking function performed by the lugs.
The interior arrangement of the sections is made for the convenience of the articles to be used or the combination article offurniture it is desired to use. have shown section 3 as being provided with a series of drawers 9 of the same or different depth, and inclosed by front 10 of the section hinged and supported by chains 11 to form a writing desk if desired or to form a support for the drawers when removed. The
drawers may have any desired interior ar-- rangement of spaces by means of partitions 15. Section 4 is shown with hinged door 4 in closed position and any convenient arrangement of the interior for articles of clothing, books and the like may be made. The bottom section 5 is a cupboard section, one drawer 12 being shown in position, and one of the doors 13 disclose it. This section may be used for shoes, hat-boxes or any other of the more bulky or heavier articles.
It will be seen that each section has an open top which is covered by the floor board 17 of the superimposed section, or by the top 8 as the case may be, thus economizing in the use of material and of space since the floor board 17 forms the bottom of one section and the top of the adjacent section.
. For example, I
being swung open to 1 for effectually securing them together, all that is necessary being merely to place one section directly upon top of the other, whereupon the sections will closely fit together and interlock each other from end and lateral movements relative to each other and will form a firm and solid construction for the desired purposes.
One ofthe principal features of my invention lies in the cheap and yet substantial manner of constructing the sections with their interlocking lugs and recesses, together with the interchangeable feature of my improved section construction.
While I have shown a particular article of furniture built up. of interlocking units, it will be understood that I do not limit myself thereto, but any combinationv of specially constructed units for particular uses may be employed and are comprehended within the scope of my .invention, as set forth in the following claims.
I claim 1 1. In sectional furniture having a pluralend and a central'notch in its fioor adjacent said recess, each recess and notch being adapted to receive its cooperatlng lug to hold said sections in fixed lateral end relation to each other, substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified.
'2. In sectional furniture, a plurality of sections, one section having aconvex upper end terminating in a superimposed cooperating section having a concave end provided with a central recess, said ends being adapted, to fit together and detachably interlock, whereby the parts are securely interlocked both longitudinally and laterally, substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified.
