PIOTR PASZNICKI, OF WEST TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
BOOKCASE.
Application filed May 10, 1918.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PIOTR PAszNIcKI, a citizen of Poland, residing at West Toronto, Province of Ontario, and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in furniture and particularly to book-cases with which are combined conveniences for correspondence.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an attractive and convenient article of furniture of the type described.
A further object is the provision of a bookcase in which are commodiously arranged, a plate which may be extended and used as a writing desk, provisions being made for containing the usual material required.
A still further object is to provide feet or supports secured in a hingedly engaged manner so that the same may be upturned, reducing the height of the writing plate at any desired time.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view showing a book-case made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same. v
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view, similar to Fig. 3 but showing the parts in a different position, and
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the bookcase.
The bookcase is made in two sections, the lower section 10 having resting upon it the upper section 11, to which is secured an ornamental vertical plate 12. Engaged by hinges 14, at the lower side of the bottom section 10, are supports 15, formed with rounded terminals 16, acting in the manner of casters whereby the book-oase may be moved from place to place as desired.
Interiorly of the sections 10 and 11 are secured horizontal shelves 18 upon which books may rest. Engaged at the front of the sections by means of hinges 20, are folding doors 21 which may have ornamental panels 22, and which are provided with extending Specification of Letters Patent.

knobs or pulls 23, and also with locks indicated by the escutcheons 24.
In the upper compartment of the lower section 10 is arranged a horizontal sliding plate 25, having a knob 2G secured to its outer edge which is flanged or upturned as at 27, the upturned edge acting as a stop preventing; the drawer 2S from being withdrawn prior to the withdrawal of the plate 25, which may be used as a writing surface.
Attached to the front 29 of the drawer is a knob 30, while the rear 32 of the drawer is beveled corresponding to the angular outer surface 33 of a compartment 34k, containing diagonal partitions 35, between which may be placed paper, envelope and the like, the compartment 34; being slidably arranged within the compartment 37, normally occupied by the drawer, and `is movable upon rails 38, arranged adjacent to the sides of the compartment, so that when the drawer is eX- tended, the compartment may be moved forward, permitting ready access to the material contained therein.
Above the compartment 34C is one or more sliding bolts 40 the same operating in the guides 41 so as to engage the upper section 11 in fixed relation with the lower or base section 10.
In operation, the writing plate 25 must iirst be withdrawn, thereupon the drawer 28 may be moved outwardly, and if desired, entirely removed, thereby permitting the entrance of the hand of an operator to draw forward the compartment 34: so as to be conveniently used by a person using the plate 25 as a writing surface.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a book-case, the combination with a hollow vertical structure formed in sections each having hori'zontal partitions, folding doors engaged at their outer edges adapted to cover said sections, a sliding plate arranged in the upper portion of the lower section, a drawer movable thereon, and means formed with said plate for preventing the removal of said drawer prior to withdrawing said plate.
2. In a sectional book-case, the combination with an upper and lower section, supports upon which said lower sections are mounted, an ornamental front plate arranged on the top of the said upper section, and a plate slflably engaged in the upper compartment of said lower section, of means for operating` said plate, a drawer having an inclined rear surface, slidable on said plate, means formed on said plate for preventing the withdrawal of said drawer prior to withdrawal of said plate, a pair of rods in said section, closely adjacent to the side walls thereof, an element slidaloly engaged on said rods, said element having an outer surface in conformity with the rear surface l0 of said drawer, and a plurality of compartments formed in said slidable element.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
PIOTR PASZNICKI.
