GUSTAV RANGE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN DESKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,345, dated June 27, 18i6 application filed August 2, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GUsTAv RANGE, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Desks or Cabinets for Type-Writing Machines, &c., of which the following is a specification Type-writing machines of simple construction and little expense are now sold and used for business purposes, and it is advantageous to have writing materials accessible when operating such machines, and to have compartments into which to assort letters and papers.
My improved desk is especially adapted to type-writing machines, but it may be used with an accountbook case or blank-holder, or other appliance inserted in the place of the type-writin g machine.
I make use of a desk with a swinging flap, beneath which is a vertically-movin g platform, carrying the type-writer or other device, to be raised or lowered when the desk-flap is turned back. I also employ swinging covers that are provided with removable pigeon-holes, so that the covers and pigeonholes may be used in connection with the desk, said pigeon-holes being in a convenient position, and swinging back with the covers. When the type-writing machine is depressed and the desk closed, the covers can be brought together, and the pigeon-holes will be inclosed by said covers, but if the covers are to be closed around the type-writing machine when in its elevated position, the pigeon-holes will be first removed from the covers.
111 the drawing, Figure l is an elevation of the desk with the covers swung back, and Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of such desk with the parts closed, and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan of the back and half cubical covers.
The table a is upon the frame-work, forming the side closets b I), with doors 0, and racks for books or other articles, and drawers 6 are, by preference, employed above the closets. The central portion of the desk between such closets b b is sufficiently open for the feet to pass in beneath the front piece f as a person sits at the desk, and this front piece f forms part of an open frame-work, within which is the platform g, that is provided with side guides h that slide in vertical grooves between the strips t i, and there are cords passing over pulleys and attached to counter weights or springs, by means of which the platform and the weight thereon are balanced, or nearly so. The device represented at 1 illustrates the frame-work of a type-writin g machine resting upon the platform 9, and as such type-writing machines are known, a further representation and description are unnecessary. A case for printed blanks, or for account-books, or for goods of any kind may take the place of the type-writer l, and be moved up and down with and upon the platform. The flap m, hinged at a, when in the position shown in Fig. 2, forms an ordinary writing-desk; when turned back, as in Fig. 1, the platform 9 and type-writer can be raised or lowered.
In the front piece f I provide an opening and door, 0, with ledges 2 and 3 at the back. This gives access to the space containing the type-writing machine without raising the deskflap on, but it is specially available for holding down the platform, when depressed, by the ledge 2 passing. above the same as the door 0 is closed, or for holding up such platform, when elevated, by the ledge 3 passing beneath the frontedge thereof as the door is closed.
In consequence of this construction, the door A 0 has to be opened when the platform is either raised or depressed. A back piece or panel, 1, is at the back part of the desk above the table and flap, and to its vertical edges the half-cubical covers are hinged at 8. Each cover is made of a top piece, t, a front piece, a, and side piece, o, so that when swung back the covers are out of the way, but-when swung together, they, with the stationary back, form a cubical case of a size sufficient to inclose the type-writer, or its equivalent.
The pigeon-holes w are made of the ordinary wooden partitions, forming compartments of a size adapted to the papers or other articles to be inserted, and upon the top pieces t are strips 5, and upon the fronts u are ledges 6, which form supports for the pigeon-holes, so that the frames of partitions can be removed from or slipped into the spaces provided for them in the respective covers, and between said ledges 5 and 6.
I do. not claim a desk made with quartercubical swinging covers in front of stationary 2. The stationary vertical back 4', and halfoubieal covers, hinged at s to said back, in combination with the swinging flap m of the desk, the parts being constructed as set forth, so as to inclose either the flap when turned back against the back-1", or articles resting upon such flap when turned down, as set forth. Signed by me this 30th day of July, A. D.
