To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILEY W. ATKINSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Columbia, in the county of Richland and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Kitchen Safe and Drawer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a new and improved kitchen safe, and a new and improved drawer for the same.

An object of this invention is to provide a kitchen safe which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong, durable, and readily accessible.

A further object of this invention is to provide a kitchen safe which may be readily taken apart and collapsed in a small space,

for the purpose of storing or shipping the same.

A further object of this invention is to provide a drawer, the separate parts of which may be readily detached from each other and collapsed in a small space, and also may be readily attached to each other and set up, to form a perfect drawer.

These and further objects, together with the construction and combination of parts, will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device assembled, parts being broken away to show the underlying structure; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the device with the top drawer removed, and also illustrated in transverse section; Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 4; Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the sides and the back, showing them detached from each other; Fig. 6 is a detached perspective view of the back side of the front; and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the front sides and back of the drawer, showing them detached from each other.

Referring more particularly to the separate parts of the device, the safe consists broadly of a front 1, back 2, sides 3 and 4, and a top 5, all detachably connected together. For the purpose of shipping to the retailer, or even to the purchaser, the sides, front and back are so arranged that they can be detached one from the other and stored in a small space, and in turn, can be readily assembled together, with the least possible trouble. For this purpose, the inner sides of the front and back are provided with grooves 6 extending along the vertical side edges thereof, into which the vertical side edges of the sides 3 and 4 are adapted to fit. For the purpose of locking the sides to the front and back, both the front and back are provided on their inner sides wit-h locking members 7, 8, 9 and. 10, in the form of vertically-arranged strips secured to the front sides in any well known manner, and provided with tongues 11 and grooves 12 on one end thereof, preferably the lower end, which are adapted to be engaged by corresponding grooves 13 and tongues 14 on looking members 15 on the sides 3 and 4.

It will be seen by reference to Figs. 5 and 6, that the upper ends of the locking strips 9 and 10, both on the back and front are a beveled, to permit the insertion of the looking members 15 from below, in order that the tongues 14 thereon may properly engage in the grooves 12 on the upper locking strips 7 and 8. For the purpose of securing the front to the back when the parts are as sembled, the front and back are provided at their upper ends, near the sides, with look- .ing members 15, 1G 17 and 18, which are provided with tenons 19, the latter being engaged by grooves 20 and 21 along transversely-extending locking bars 22, forming mortise joints at each end of the locking bars, thereby securing the front and back together.

The sides 3 and 4 are provided at suitable intervals with supporting strips 23, 24 and 25, for the purpose of supporting suitable shelves 26, 27 and 28. Access is to be had into the interior of the safe by means of a plurality of upper and lower doors 29 and 30, which may be of any suitable form, but preferably consist of pairs of doors arranged so as to swing outwardly away from each other. Intermediate the openings closed by the doors 29 and 30, there is provided an opening 31 in the front 1, in which is slidingly mounted a drawer 32. This drawer is of a peculiar structure, in that it can be readily disassembled into its component parts and subsequently assembled to form a complete drawer. The drawer 32 consists of a front 33, sides 34, back 35, and bottom 36. It will be noted by reference to Fig. 4 that the rear sides of the front 33 are recessed adjacent the ends thereof. These recesses are peculiar, in that they are inclined outwardly and forwardly on their outer sides, and are curved outwardly and forwardly on their inner sides. These recesses form suitable sockets for corresponding tenons 37 on the sides 34. The inner sides of the opposite ends of the sides 34 are provided with clovetailed grooves 38, which are adapted to be engaged by'corresponding dove-tailed tenons'39 on the back 35. It will thus be seen that by inserting the tenons 37 into the recesses in the front 33, and then interposing the back between the rear ends of the sides 34, and looking it by means of the dovetailed joints, a positive rigid structure will be formed, permitting no loose movement. The inner sides of the front 33 and the sides 34 of the drawer are provided with grooves 40, in which is adapted to be inserted the bottom 36. The back 35 does not extend the full depth of the front 33 and the sides 34, so as to permit the insertion of the bottom 36 beneath the back 35.

It will thus be seen that a simple and inexpensive kitchen safe is formed, which can be readily taken apart and assembled together, and which is readily accessible, and which is, further, provided with a strong and simply-constructed drawer, the latter being capable of being taken apart and assembled together, in the shortest possible space of time.

WVhile I have shown one embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the specific details thereof, but desire to be protected in various changes, modifications and alterations which I may make within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a kitchen safe, the combination with a front and back, said front and back having vertical grooves along the side edges, the sides engaging said grooves, of locking strips having tongue-and-groove ends on said front and back, locking members having corresponding ton'gue-and-grooves on said locking strips to form staggered'locking joints, some of said locking strips being beveled at their upper ends to allow for the passage of said locking members, locking members on said front and back, having tenons thereon, and locking bars engaging said tenons on said last-mentioned locking members, for locking said front and back together.

2. In a kitchen safe, the combination with a front and back, said front and back having vertical grooves along the side edges, of sides engaging said grooves, a plurality of vertically-extending locking strips on each side of both the front and back, said locking strips having downwardlyextending tongues spaced apart from the front and back, the lower locking strips having their top ends beveled, and locking members on said sides having upwardly extending tongues adapted to engage between the tongues on said locking strips and the front and back. 3. In a kitchen safe, the combination with a front and back, said front and back hav ing vertical grooves along the side edges, of

sides engaging said grooves, a plurality ofvertically-extending locking strips on each side of both the front and back, said locking strips having downwardly-extending tongues spaced apart from the front and back, the lower locking strips having their topsbe veled, locking members on said sides having upwardlyextending tongues adapted to engage between the tongues on, said locking strips and the front and back, additional locking members on the front and back havin g upwardly-extending tenons thereon, and transversely-extending bars having grooves adapted to engage said tenons, forming mortise joints whereby said front and back are secured together.
