IMPROVEMENT IN SOFA-BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,374, dated October 23, 1877 application filed August 18, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ABRAHAM MORRIS, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sofa-Bedstead, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved bed-lounge, shown folded up as a lounge. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the bed-lounge, showing the hinged seat-section and swiveled head-section in the act of being opened; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, also shown in the act of being swung into open position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This inventionrelates to an improved bedlounge, that may be quickly and conveniently opened to form a bed, and folded up again into the shape of a lounge, the parts working with great facility in opening and folding; and the invention consists of a swinging seat section hinged to the lounge-frame, and of a head-section swiveled centrally to the swinging section, and connected at the upper rear corner by a strap with the headsection of the lounge-fiame. The swiveled head-section has a supporting front foot that fits into a recess of the loimge-frame, and to corner-recesses of the head-piece of the same.
The swivel-connection of the swinging seatsection and headpiece is steadied by pins of the seat-section bearing on the sides of the swivel-plate of the head-section.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the main part or lounge-frame, and B the headsection of my improved bed-lounge. A swinging seat-section, O, is hinged to the front part of the loimge-frame, and opened outwardly in the customary manner, forming, when in entirely open position, together with the loimgesection, a regular bed. A head-section, D, fits over the headpiece B of the lounge-frame, and is swiveled centrally to the end piece of the swinging seat-section C, so as to be lifted and carried in outward position simultaneously with the swinging of the seat-section O. The swiveled head-section D is connected with the head-piece B by a leather or other strap, E,
that is attached to the inner upper corner of the head-section D and to the top of the head piece B, for the purpose of controlling the mo tion of the swiveled head-piece D, and compel it to turn into horizontal position, adjoining the head-piece B, jointly with the swinging seat-section.
The head-section D has a rigid front foot, D, that supports the same in open position, while the seat-section is supported on swinging legs in any approved manner. The foot D fits into a face-recess, a, of the head-piece B, when swung back in the same, so as to be flush with front part of the lounge-frame. A top strip, 1), of the head-piece B is cut off at both ends or corners, and fitted into the open part of the head-section D, so that when the same is folded back 011 the head-piece B it rests by its foot on the face-recess, and by its top part on the top part of the head-piece B,
being steadily retained thereon without shaking by the recessed top strip.
The swivel-connection of the seat-section O and head-section D is locked firmly, when the sections are in open or folded position, by two steadying-pins, d, of the swivel-plate d of the seat-section O, as the pins bind on the straight sides of the fixed swivel-plate c of the headsection, and pass readily along the roundedoif upper edge of the swivel-plate 0 during the swinging motion of the seat-section, as shown in Fig. 3.
The swiveled and strapconnected head-section D is operated automatically and simultaneously with the swinging of the seat-section into opened or folded position, and rigidly supported when arriving in either position. This swivelQ-connection of seat-section and head-section requires, therefore, merely the swinging of the seat-section to open or fold the lounge, and makes the handling of the lounge readily understood, and the change from lounge to bed, and vice versa, quickly and easily attended to.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A bed-lounge constructed of a main part or lounge-frame, with rigid head-piece, and of a hinged swinging seat-section and movable headseetion, swiveled centrally to seat-section and operated therewith, substantially as and for the purpose described. r V p 2. The combination, of the main frame A and fixed head-piece B with hinged seat-section G and a movable head-section, D; swiveled centrally to seat-section and connected by a top strap with fixed head-piece B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of the main frame A and fixed head-piece B, having face-recess a, with the hinged seat-section G andswiveled headseetion D, having rigid front foot D fitted into recess a, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of main frame A and fixed head-piece B, h ving face-recess CL and end-recessed top strip b, with the swinging seat-section O and swiveled head-section D, 7
sections when in open or folded position, substantially as set forth.
