Application filed September 12, 1910, Serial No. 581,491.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 23, 1912.
Renewed December 2, 1911. Serial No. 663,476.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK C. RoBnRTs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in. the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is an improved folding bed which, in practice, is made of suitable size for use as a dolls folding bed and which may be made of any size required, the intention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a folding bed constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the bed frame in extended horizontal position, ready for use, in full lines, and in folded position within the upright frame in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line A-A of Fig. 1.
In accordance with my invention I provide an upright boX or frame 1 which is here shown as comprising a bottom 2, a top 3, a back 4 and sides 5, one sideof the frame eing open, as at 6. In connection with the upright frame I also provide a bed frame 7 which comprises a head board 8, a foot board 9, side rails 10, and a bottom 11. The head portion of the bed frame is disposed in the lower portion of the upright frame, between the sides of the said upright frame, and the head frame is pivotally mounted in the upright frame for angular movement in a vertical plane, so that the bed frame may be folded upwardly into the upright frame or may be extended outwardly therefrom in a horizontal position, for use as a bed, the pivots which connect the bed frame to the upright frame being indicated at 12.
In practice the upright frame is preferably ornamented and the back 4 or outer side thereof may be provided with a mirror or other ornamental or useful device. On the side rails of the bed frame, near the foot thereof, are supporting legs 18, the upper ends of which are pivotally mounted, as at 14, and the said supporting legs are bed frame is lowered the supporting legs bear on the floor and support the foot of the bed frame and when the bed frame is raised and closed within the upright frame the supporting legs maintain a vertical position by gravity and fold within the upright frame between the sides of the bed. frame and the sides of the upright frame, so that the supporting legs become hidden from view. A back or head rest- 15 has its lower side edge connected to the upper edge of the head board of the bed frame by means of hinges 16 and at the upper side of the head or back rest is a flange 17 which projects rearwardly therefrom and bears against the back 4 of the upright frame. The said head or back rest lies in an inclined position, and by reason of its hinge connection with the head board of the bed frame is lowered when the bed frame is folded up in the upright frame and is raised when the bed frame is lowered, the said head or back rest being free to slide verti cally between the sides of the upright frame, and against the back thereof. On the inner side of the back of the upright frame at its center is a vertical stop piece 18 which extends for a suitable distance from the bottom of the upright frame. The height of the said stop piece is such that when the bed frame is folded up in the upright frame the flange 17 of the head or back rest 15 comes in contact with and bears upon the upper end of the said stop piece 18 and serves to prevent the upper end of the bed frame from being moved inwardly in the upright frame to an undue extent.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of devices herein shown and described, as it is evident that modifications may be made therein within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what claim is The combination with an upright frame having a stop strip in the back thereof, a bed frame having its head portion pivotally mounted between the sides of the upright frame so that the said bed frame may be folded up into the upright frame or extended outwardly therefrom, and a slide or rest disposed for vertical and angular movefree to turn by gravity, so that when the ment in the upright frame between the side strip when the bed frame is folded up withwalls of said upright frame, the lower porin the upright frame. 10
tion of the said slide or rest being hinged In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my directly to the head of the bed frame so that signature in the presence of two witnesses.
said slide may be operated by said bed FRANK C. ROBERTS. frame, said slide being provided at its up- Witnesses:
per side with a rearwardly extending stop PERCY RAINS,
flange to bear on the upper side of the stop J. H. HARRIMAN.
