Be it known that I, GUSTAVE A. SAMUELS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellingham, in the county of WVhatcom' and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Bedsteads and Tables, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in combined bedsteads and tables, and has for one of its objects to provide a simply constructed device whereby a bedstead may be quickly and readily transformed into a table Without material alteration of the construction of the bedstead.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this charatcer which may be readily applied without material structural change to bedsteads of various forms and sizes and which does not interfere with the employment of the device as a table.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily dismembered for shipment or storage.

lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device arranged as a bed; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side view of the improved device arranged as a table; Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4l4 of Fig. 8; Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the supporting brackets; Fig. 6 is a detail view illustrating a modification in the construction.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The bed portion of the improved device is formed substantially in the usualmanner and comprises a head 10, a foot 11 and sides 1218, these parts being of the usual construction except that the head and foot members are of the same height. The sides 1213 are detachably coupled to the head and foot members by the usual hook devices indicated at 14.15. The bed portion will be provided with the usual mattress and springs, but as these portions form no part of the present invention, they are not illustrated. The sides 1213 are formed with their upper edges extending horizontally from end to end, while the head and foot members correspond substantially in height to the framework of an ordinary table, and thus project a considerable distance above the upper edges of the sides12-13. Hinged at 1617 to the upper edges of the sides 12-13 are side members 1819 which when elevated fill the gap between the upper edges of the sides l2-13 and the head and foot members as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. By this means the mattress and springs and bed clothing of the improved device are entirely concealed when the device is employed as a table as hereafter more fully explained. When employed as a bed, the filler members 1819 are folded down parallel to the sides 1218 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

The attachments for supporting the table portion of the improved device are connected to the head and foot near their ends, four of the devices being employed, and are precisely alike, and the description of one will suflice for all. Attached to each of the head and foo-t members near their ends, is a supporting bracket comprising a base plate 20 having vertical guides 21 spaced apart and open at the top and closed at the bottom, as shown. Detachably supported between the guides 21 and resting at its lower end upon the closed bottom of the guides, is a standard 22 having a vertical slot 23. The standard is thus readily detachable from the bracket, as will be obvious.

Pivoted at 24 in the upper end of the bracket is an L-shaped member comprising two arms 25-26. Pivoted at one end at 27 upon opposite sides of the elbow of the L-shaped member, are bars 2829, the opposite end of the bars being coupled by a pin 30 extending through the slot 23 of the standard. The pin 30 bears upon the bottom of the slot 23 when the L-shaped member is in its outward position as shown in Fig. 1, and thus supports the L-shaped member and its attachments in open position, as hereafter explained.

The supporting devices are arranged in pairs, one pair being attached to the head 10, and another pair attached to the foot 11 of the bedstead, and attached to each pair of the members 26 is an outer table section 31, and hinged at 32 to each outer table section 31, is an inner table section 33. Each free edges of the inner table sections 38 will rest upon the upper ends of the head and foot sections 10l1, and are secured in this position by bolts 34:. The bolts are also employed to assist in supporting the table sections in open position, as represented in Fig. 1. Similar bolts 35 are attached to the eX- tension members 1819 and operate to hold the members 18]9 in elevated position as shown in Fig. 3, and may also be utilized to hold the members 18-19 in their lowered position, as shown in Fig. 1.

It will be noted that the outer edges of the table sections 81 extend for some distance beyond the elbow portions of the L-shaped supporting members so that when the device is arranged as a table as shown in Fig. 3, the ends of the table overhang the supports and thus conceal them from observation, so that the device presents the same appearance as an ordinary table.

The supporting members between the bedstead structure and the table sections are of metal as light as possible consistent with the strains to which they will be subjected and may be japanned, plated, painted or otherwise protected or ornamented.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. The combination with a bedstead including head and foot members, of table sections each formed of coacting members hingedly united, and means for hingedly uniting the outer member of each section respectively to the head and foot members, the coacting members being so proportioned that the inner member of each section will bear upon the head and foot boards and stand in vertical alinement therewith when in open position.

2. The combination with a bedstead including head and foot members and side rails, supplemental side members hingedly united to the side rails and adapted to swing into vertical alinement with the same, table sections each formed of coacting members hingedly united, and means for hingedly uniting the outer member of each sect-ion respectively to the head and foot members, whereby the inner member of each table section may be supported respectively upon the head and foot member and extend in vertical alinement therewith when in open position and bear upon the upper edges of the supplemental side members when in closed position.
