T which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in that class of folding bedsteads in which are combined a pedestal portion and a bed-frame pivoted thereto and provided with weights arranged to counterbalance the excess of weight at the foot of said bedframe.

The object of my invention is to simplify the construction of this class of beds and to so construct it as to represent a book or other like case in outline form.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an isometrical representation of the bed in its folded position. Fig. 2 is an isomctrical rcpresentation of the bed in its open position. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the bed in its closed position, cut through the pivot-connection of the bed-frame, with its pedestal portion and of the hinged connection of the feet with the bed-fra1ne.

As represented in the drawings, the pedes tal portion of my improved bed is composed of the ends 1 and 2, front 3, and top 4, suitably joined together to produce the form shown. An opening in the top is of such size as to permit the head portion of the bed-frame to freely swing therein. The folding portion is composed of the side rails,5 and 6, head end 7, foot end 8, and bottom 9, joined to the side rails in a manner to produce the bed represented. The side rails extend beyond the head end and,in connection with the bottom 10 and 11, form a receptacle to hold the eounterbalance-weight 12, placed therein.

The head-board of my bed is composed of two sections, 13 and 14, hinged together ina Ina-nner to permit the section 14 to fold on the section 13, and the section 13 is hinged to the head end of the folding section. Suitable braces,1`5, connect section 13 of the head-board with the side rails in a manner to hold it in a vertical position during the occupancy of the bed, as shown in solid lines in Fig; 2, and also serve as corner brackets to hold the bedclothes in proper shape when it is occupied. A hook-and-staple connection, 16, of the sec'- tion 14 of the head-board with the side rails will hold the head-board in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and in solid lines in Fig. 3, which serves to hold the bedclothing in position while the bed is folded.

A foot-board, 17, is hinged to the foot end S of the folding section of the bed, and is also supported in the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 2 by a two-part brace, 18, connected to the foot-board and side rails, and is held in its closed position, as in Fig. 3 and in dotted lines in Fig. 2, by a hook-and-staple connection, 19, which also serves to hold the foot portion of the bedding in proper shape when folded.

Feet 2O are connected by a cross-piece, 21, and are hinged to the foot end of the folding section of the bed in a manner to supportthe said folding section when thc bed is opened, as shown in Fig. 2, and when the bed is closed the feet 20 and cross-piece 21 form the cornice, as shown in Fig. 1.

The folding section of my improved bed, constructed as above described, is supported upon the pedestal portion by means of a pivot bracket, 22, secured to the front of the folding section, and having their lower free ends rounded to enter grooves 23, formed in the top of the pedestal portion, forming a knucklepivot support to the folding portion of the bed.

Then it is desired to prepare the bed for use, the folding section is moved from its vertical position shown in Fig. 1 to its horizontal position shown in Fig. 2. The head and foot boards are then unfastened, and the portion 14 of the head-board is then folded onto the portion 13. Then bot-h head and foot boards are placed and held in the vertical position shown in solid lines in Fig. 2 by 4the brace-supports. The hinged feet will, by the action of gravity, assume a vertical position, as in Fig. 2, and will support the foot end of the bed.

The counterbalance-weight in the head portion will counteract or balance the weight of the foot portion thereof, and its balance will be substantially uniform throughout its movements, and when the bed is in its folded or vertical position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the side rails will engage the stops 24, fixed to the pedestal, to limit its upward movement to a vertical, position, and the position of the counterbalance weight relatively with the IOC) pivot-support of the bed in its connection Wi th the pedestal serves to hold it in its vertical or folded position.

Ifit be deemed necessary, the grooves 23 and the rounded ends of the bracket 22 may be of metal, or may have metallic-faced bearings which Will prevent wearing of the parts.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination,in a Ward'robe-bedstead, of a pedestal portion provided on its upper face with grooves, a folding section provided with knuckle-surfaces to enter said grooves, and a Weight to counterbalance the foot end ot' Y the folding section, substantially as and 'for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with the base or pcdestal provided with grooves in its upper face, of the folding section having ornamental pieces secured to its front or under face near theloWer end, the lower ends of said ornamental pieces being rounded to fit the grooves to forma knuckle-joint connection between the folding portion and the base,substantially as set forth.

3. The combination,inaWardrobe-bedstead, of a pedestal portion provided on its upper face with grooves, a folding section provided With knuckle-surfaces to enter said grooves, a Weight to counterbalanoe the foot end of the folding section, a two-part head-board hinged to the folding section, a foot-board hinged to the folding section, and braces connecting the headboard and foot-board with the folding section, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
