Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBION L. WARNER AND CHARLES A. WARNER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
INTERCONVERTIBLE BEDSTEAD AND TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,637, dated May 15, 1883.
Application filed April 9, 1883.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBION L. WARNER and CHARLES A. WARNER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Interconvertible Bedstead and Table, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention has relation particularly to that kind of folding bedstead in which a flexible and elastic mattress is suspended by its ends alone, and is put under tension only when the bedstead is unfolded, as described more particularly in Reissued Letters Patent No. 7,892, dated September 18,1877. It is our object to so organize and arrange the parts of such a bedstead that when folded up it will serve as and present the appearance of a table. The manner in which we attain this object can best be explained and understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bedstead unfolded. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same folded up.
A is a center stand or support, which, when the bedstead is folded up, constitutes the base of the table, as indicated in Fig. 2. To it are hinged at a a, respectively, the two folding sections B B of the bed-frame. The one portion has the head-board O, the other portion the foot-board 1), between which extends the wire mattress E, or other flexible and elastic bed-bottom. To B and B are attached hinged and folding legs I), to support the ends of the unfolded bedstead. The legs are of such height with respect to the pivot or hinge points a a and the points at which the mattress is attached to the head and foot boards that when the bed stead is unfolded fully (with the eflect of putting the mattress under tension) the points at which the mattress is attached to the headand foot boards will be in a plane a little below the pivots a a, so'that the draft of the mattress on the head and foot boards will have the effect of holding open and fully extended the sections B B. In order to prevent the sections under these conditions from being drawn too far," they are provided at or near the points a a! with look- (No model.)
joints, or joints to lock and engage thecenter part, A, the means for this purposeconsisting of a shoulder or notch, c, on each of the prolonged inner ends of the side rails of the sections, which notches or shoulders, when the bedstead is unfolded to the proper extent, meet and catch under similar shoulders, 01, on the ends of a bar or rail, 0, fastened one on each side of the base or center A. The sections B'B are of equal length, and the head and foot boards are formed with smooth outer faces and with straight tops, the construction and arrangement being such that when the sections are folded up, as seen in Fig. 2, the head and foot boards 0 D will be brought closely together, forming in effect a tabletop, as represented, the two sections being held together in this position by hooks and pins c, or other suitable fastening devices. In the drawings the devices 6 are shown as on top of the table in Fig. 2; but manifestly they can just as'easily be on the sides.
The bedding can be readily folded up, with the mattress when the bedstead is folded up, and a,table-cover thrown over the top of the table will effectually conceal from view the mattress.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The center stand or base, in combination with the end sections, B B, hinged thereto, substantially as described, and, provided, respectively, with head and foot boards, which, when the sections are folded up, come together to form a table-top and a flexible and elastic bed-bottom, attached by its ends only to said sections, and having the points at which it is thus attached located with respect to the hinges or pivots on which the sections turn substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands this 5th day of April, 1883.
ALBION L. WARNER. CHARLES A. WARNER.
