Description

n41). SHUPE.
Wardrobe-.Beds'tead.
' No. 21o,057.- Patented Nov. 19,1878.
NJ PETER$ PHGRLUTHDGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D O.
UNITED STATES "PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID D. SHUPE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WARDBOBE-BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,057, dated November 19, 1878 application filed July 12, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID D. SHUPE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds; and I do hereby'declare that the fol-" lowing is a full, clear, andrexact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in' the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention is intended as an improvement upon Letters Patent No. 192,621, for folding bedsteads, dated July 3, 1877; and it consists in dividing the side rails of a bedstead longitudinally, so that a portion of each side rail can be folded down when the bed is extended, forming a low or narrow rail, and locking the rail proper, all as hereinaftermore fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, to which reference is made, and which fully illustrates my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bedstead folded. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same unfolded ready for use.
A represents the head-board, O the footboard, B the side rails, D the legs, and E the braces, of the bedstead, all constructed and arranged substantially in the same manner as described in the patent above referred to.
Each of the side rails B is divided crosswise in the center, and the two parts connected by hinges a, to allow of their folding, as shown in Fig. 1. Each side rail B thus divided in two parts, hinged together, is further divided longitudinally for any desired portion of its length, the upper portions, B, of each said hinge can only be brought into play when the upper portions, B, are raised to complete the side rail. In this latter position the parts B are locked by buttons F or other suitable means. When the bed is extended and the parts B of the side rails let down, as shownin Fig. 2, the side rails cannot be folded, but are locked in position, thus dispensing with any other locking device. 7 v
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, andv desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a folding bedstead of substantially the character herein shown, the transversely-divided side rail B, having its upper portion, B, made separate and hinged to it, said hinged upper portion being also divided transversely, and the two parts united together by a hinge, a, whereby, when the part B is turned down, the divided side rail becomes locked and cannot be folded, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID D. SHUPE.
