Description
U TTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. UNVERZAGT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COT -BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 75,211. dated March 21, 1876; application filed January 17, 1676.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. UNVER- ZAGT, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Got-Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to construct a simple, compact, and portable cot-bedstead, which may, when occasion requires, be used as a mattress 011 an ordinary bedstead; and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional View of my improved cot-bedstead arranged for use as an ordinary mattress; Fig. 2, the same in the condition of a bedstead, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of a portion of the same.
A is the frame of the bedstead, and B the mattress, the latter consisting of a covering of textile fabric, secured at its four edges to the frame A, and containing the usual stuffing. The mattress has at one end a hinged portion, B, which is provided with a weightcd pawl, a, adapted to teeth in the upper edge of a strip, b, secured to the frame A. This frame is of a box-like form, and to the inside of each of its side strips are pivoted two legs, I) D, which may be either turned up within the frame, as shown in Fig. 1, or turned to the inclined position shown in Fig. 2, when they bear against inclined shoulders 01 d. The
arms at m of a board, F, are hinged to the frame A, the said arms permitting the board to be folded down onto the mattress when the latter has to occupy a small. space, or can be turned up, so as to become a foot-board for the bed, as in Figs. 1 and 2.
When a cot-bedstead is required, the legs D D are turned down and the hinged head B elevated, as shown in Fig. 2, the legs, when in this position, bearing against the inclined shoulders 01 d, and being in the best position for sustaining a heavy weight.
The manner of adjusting the device when it is required for use as a simple mattress or an ordinary bedstead will be readily understood without explanation.
I do not desire to claim a bed-frame with folding legs, or a bed-frame with adjustable head; but
I claim as my invention- The combination of the folding adjustable head B and the folding legs D D with the frame A and its mattress B, the whole being adapted to be used as a mattress or a cot-bedstead, as set forth.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE L. UN VERZAGT.
