IMPROVEMENT IN SOFA-BEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. Bl, dated April 11,1571.
fc all whom, L may cancern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. SCHMITT, ofthe City, county, and State of New York,l1ave invented a new and Improved Sofa-Bed; and I do hereby 'declare that the followingis afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilledv in the art to make and use the saine, reference being vhad to the aeconipanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a back elevation of my improved sofabed. Fig. 2 is a vertical trans` verse section of the saine, showing it folded together for a sofa. Fig. 3 is atransverse section ofthe same, showing it extended for a bed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new sofa-bed, which is so arranged that the sofa-lining will not be occupied for supporting the bed,and that the length of sofa will constitute the breadth ofthe bed.
The invention consists, chiey, in the use of a hollow or double back on the sofa, within which part of the mattress is Concealed, and which, when extended, will form part of the bed-bottom, and also the. headboard ofthe bed.
A in the drawings represents the lower or supporting fra-lne of the sofa-bed. It rests on legs or standards a a, and is as wide and long as the sofa. It constitutes a box having a removable lid, b, as in Fig. 2, and can be used to contain pillows, sheets, and other bedding.
To the front of the bed is hinged, at c, the plate B, carrying the sofa-cushion d, which can be folded upon the box A, as in Fig. 2, or outwardly to extend thesurface of the saine, as in Fig. 3. In the latter position the cushion d is under the surface of the plate B, as shown.
The outer end ofthe plate B is supported by legs E E, which are hinged to it, or separately applied, and can have upward extensions or project from aboard, c, that will forni the footboard of the bed.
Cis the back of the sofa. It is, ath, hinged to the box A, and has the cushioned part D hinged to the top ofits frame, as atf, so that when the frame C is folded back in line with the top of A the cushion D can be swung up to constitute the head-board of the bed, with its cushioned surface on the outside. The frame C is supported horizontally by folding legs g g and vertically by pivoted bracess t' i, as is shown, respectively, in Figs. 3 and l.
The mattress F, which covers the parts B A C of the bed, is doubled between B and A when the sofa iS formed, and has its upper end concealed between the parts C D of the back, as is clearly shownin Fig. 2.
Having thus described nly invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The sofa-back composed of the parts C and D, between which part ofthe mattress can be concealed,- substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The sofa-bed composed of the parts AB C D, all hinged together, to operate substantially as herein shown and described.
