FRANK J. F. KOHLMANN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
@Oil/IPUSIITIE. FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 667,983, at d ebruary 1 190ili li mi fil d April 12, 1900. Serial No. 12,606- (No model.)
To all 11/71/0722 it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK J. F. KOHL- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oomposite Furniture, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has relation to improvements in composite furniture; and it consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of the article folded into a sofa. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same folded into the form of a bed, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of Fig. 1.
The object of my invention is to construct a folding chair or sofa in such manner that the same may be converted into a lounge or bed either alone or in combination with a series of folding chairs, as will presently more fully appear from a detailed description of the invention, which is follows:
Referringto the drawings,1 represents a box or body portion having end walls 1 extending slightly beyond the plane of the rear vertical wall of the box. To the rear edge of the end walls are hinged the leaves 2, which may be folded snugly against the end walls or folded outwardly parallel to and rearwardly thereof. The box is provided with a spring-mattress 3 (the springs being concealed by a suitable co vering) and an upholstered cushion at. To the rear edge of the box is hinged a back composed of two sections 5 5, also upholstered and pivoted to one another, the upper section being provided at each end with pivoted arms 6 of a length sufficient to span the hinge-line between the sections, the free ends of the arms being adapted to be engaged by a latch 7 when the sections are folded upwardly, and thus retain the sections rigidly together. When the sections are folded down, the arms 6 serve as legs for the upper section 5, which under the circumstances remains in an inclined position as a head-rest. Pivoted to the upper edges of the Walls 1 are arm supports or rests 8, which when swung upwardly are coupled to the ends of the section 5 of the back by a latch 9. The several parts when folded to assume the position shown in Fig. 1 constitute a sofa of ordinary design. The forward upper edge of the box has hinged thereto an extension 10, provided with legs 11, pivoted to swing lengthwise of the box, the said legs being adapted to fold against the extension before the latter is let down to the position shown in Fig. 1. In the figures referred to 4 represents the outer upholstered portion or surface. The box is adapted to contain the sheets and pillows and other parts that go to make up the bedding, the latter being stored therein when not used. In Fig. 2 the several parts are folded out to form a bed, the leaves 2 serving to support the section 5 of the back.
Having described my invention, what I claim is An article of furniture comprising a box or body portion, a back formed of two sections pivotally connected to one another and to the body portion, an arm or arms hinged to the upper section and being of a length to overlap the hinge-line between the two sections, means for locking said arms, arm-rests pivoted at the upper edges of the end walls and provided with means for coupling the same to the back, leaves hinged to the rear edges of the end walls and adapted to be swung outwardly and rearwardly for the support of the inner section of the back, a forward extension hinged to the box and having folding legs to support the same, the parts operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK J. F. KOHLMANN.
