TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, S. H. MAPES, of Almond, in the county of Alleghany, and State of New York, have` invented-a new and useful Folding Bedstead," and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, making part of this speci- Figure 1 is a front elevationl of the case, with the bedstead and bed folded, and one side thrown open, with the washstand shelf` adjusted for use.`
Figure 2 is a'verticalv longitudinal section, showing the case thrown open, and the bedstoad to receive the mattress, Ste. l
Figure 3 is a top of the case and bedstead folded, the top oi' the case being removed.
Like letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention 4consists in connecting the cross-slats to elasticstraps that will properly space them when in use, and will contract and fold them when-the straps are disconnected in the centre, and in the arrangement of the folding bedstead with a case of peculiar construction for its reception.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
I provide a suitable base, A, to which is aiixed the back B and the narrow sides S. These are sui-mounted' by the top, having s. hinged lid, E. The folding orswinging sections or sides S are hinged to the sides S, as shown, and the freut sections or doors D are hinged to the outer edge of these, as shown in figs. 1 and 8. The case should be made of suitable length and height to receive `the widthot the bedstead and the height ot' the head-board, The side rails R are each providedl with joints f, g, aiid 7L, figs. 2 and 3, the central hinge folding in the opposite direction from the other two, as shown. Therails have an ordinary narrow band, e, attached at the lower edge for the support of the cross-barst. These bars are attached to the elastic or other suitable ribbons or straps r, which are fastened at one end to the head and to'the foot-boards, and one ofthe end bars or slats is provided at each end with a staple, and the other end bar with a hook, i, to connect the two sections of slats and ho'ld them in their proper relative position when the bedstead is extended, as shown in fig. 2. When the bedsteadis to he folded, the slats are unhoolte'd and the two sections are rolled up against the head and footboards, which permits the foldingcfthe side rails, as shown in iig. 3. v The foot-postez; may be made a trifle .longer than the head-posts, if desired, to compensate for the thicknessof the base A. They/may be provided withcasters c, iig. 2. The posts of the head-board H may be secured yto the case by a suitable strap, P. There may vberibsorbars J attached to the baseto Aact as guides for the foot-posts, and also as steadying-bars for tho hinged sides S. The wash-stand shelt` Gis hinged to the inside of one of the front sections or doors of the case, and it is provided with a pivoted or hinged brace, c, by which it is held in position, and by removing the foot of the brace from the notch in the door the shelf is folded down as indicated by the dotted-lines G', tig. 1. When the bcdstead is folded as shown in figs. 1 and 3, the mattress is rolled and secured by two straps, one of-which is shown' at N, tig. 1, and the pillowsanfl other bed clothing are packed in the space above the bedstead, and thewash-bowl, pitcher, dto., set beneath. The two contiguous edges of the, doors may be attached or connected together by a lock or hook, and the lid secured to them in a similarunanner.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Attaching -the slats bof each section to the rubber or elastic bands r, which will be more or less stretched when the sections of the slats are to be connected together'in the centre, that being done by suitable hooks z', substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
2. The arrangement of the folding bedstead with the `enclosing c ase, composed of the hinged or swinging sections S and D, and the hinged top E, substantially as described.
S. H. MARES.
