C. D, READ, or BURLINGTON, VERMON'T...
Letters Patent No. 66,39Q,.dated July .5, 1867.
IMPRovsD-BD-Bo'rron.
` TO ALL WHOM ITMAY CON CERN.:
Beit known that I, C. D. READ, of Burlington, in the cpunty of Chittenden, and in the State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Spring-Bod Bottoms; and do h'ereb): declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a. part of'v this specification; l
In the annexed drawings, A A represent n series of horizontal slats, which areplaccd at suitabledistnnces apart, and oi'la sizeto suit the length of the bedstead. B B represent trvo lcross-rails, one placed near the head, and the other nenr the foot of the bed, and which nre provided with coil-springs, such as are commonly used in spring-bed bottoms. One of thesesprings, C, is placed undereach rail A, and irmly attached to the cross-pieces BL. Each of the slats A A is provided with a. circular block of wood or metal on its under side, which fits neatly into the contracted'tops of the coil-springs C, ns shown in Figure 2,4therehy assisting the strength of the spring, and forming a substantial connection for the s1ats. Upon .the cross-piecesB B are placed two nnilsv @with hooksformed at the top foi-connecting the lower round of the spring to the rail. Two of these hooked nails' are jirstsec'ured in the rail on each side of the-sprin the coil. d d represent hooked nails plafced each side of the spring upon Athe nected'leather or India-rubber hands, a, which pass from one hook to the other, overthe top of the rail.A,` and outside of the spring;` as shown` in fig. 2. It will thus be seen that each rail is secured upon the spring independent of the others, -and can ensily'and readil) he taken from the bedstcad should it become broken. v
Haring thus fully described my in vention, wlmt I claim ns new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The combination and arrangement of the slat A with block D, and rail B with its hooked nails sg-x and d, with-coil-spring-C and strap a, when constructed and used iii the manner end for the purposes speciiied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of April,-1867.
