TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN l Be it known that I, HENRY A. COOKE, of Charlestown, in the county of Middlesex, and in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads; and do hereby declare that the following is a fll, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. My invention consists in the construction of a portable cot or bedstead, with a spring bottom, and in such a manner that itcan be easily taken apart and stored away. v

In the annexed drawings, AA represent thc'two side rails of the bedstead, to which are attached thejointed end pieces B B between which the bed-bottom is placed. TheI ends of the bedstead are hinged, z', to the sides at each corner, while the end pieces themselves are also hinged, z, at their centres, so that by lapping the said ends inwards .the sides may be pressedtogether and the hedstead stored awayl or made portable. The bottom of this bed is composed of a series of slats, C C, with their ends split, wherein is inserted a rubber strip, g, and which. is afterwards passed over the top and nailed to the said slats. At the under part of the slats is a horizontalbar, D, at the head and foot of the bed-bottom, which is attached to the 'slats by the pins z z, which may b'e Withdrawn and the bars released from the slats when desired. Each end of the bars D D has a small metal plate, 1', upon the under side, which isV bent below the end of the bar. a represents a rubber band which is placed against the plate aud there secured by a small strip, e, passing from the bottom to the end of the bar, (see Figures 2 and 3,) These rubber bands a a are caught into suitable catches on thoinside of the side rails A A, and while suspending the slatsand connecting the bed-bottom givelthe same elasticity. E E, Figure 4, represent thefeet of the bedstead, which are pivoted aty to the inside of the rails A A, and can be let out or folded up,"as required. Y It will thus he seen that a spring-bedibottom is formed within thel frame of the bedstead, and can be readily taken apart and folded up. By disengaging the rubber bands a a from their catches, the entire bottom is taken `from the stead and the bars D can be taken from the slats so that the slats may be folded up and bedsteud lapped together.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is- The arrangement of the slats C C, connected by the rubber strips g g, and bars D D, said bars being provided with the loopsa a for connecting to the bed-bottom, as herein described and for the purposes set forth.
