SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,166, dated October 9, 188i".

To all 11171/07175 it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABRAM Q. ALLIs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of bedbottoms wherein the lazy-tongs motion is eniployed; and the object of my invention is to provide a simple means by which the bed-bottom may be locked to any desired width, so that it will remain rigidly in one position after it is locked to iit either a large or a small size bedstead. Another object sought to be accomplished by my invention is to arrange the locking device so that it will act as a diagonal brace to prevent any and all end movement of the slats composing' thebed-bottom, and which have attached to them the lazy-tongs motion. The means by which I accomplish these results are fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-y v Figure 1 represents a top view or plan with the top slats removed to show the mechanism; Fig. 2, a side elevation; and Fig. 3, a plan, Showing my improved bed bottom having eight bottom slats instead of five, as represented in Fig. 1.
By reference to these drawings it will be seen that one or more of the arms B, of which thelazy-tongs motion is composed, is extended until it reaches the slat to which the next lazytong arm is attached, as shown at l1., Fig. 1. rlhe slat thus reached is provided with a slot, (shown at c, Fig. 1.) The end of the lazy-tongs arm thus extended is provided with a thumbscrew, (shown at k and m, Figs. 1 and 2.) The bolt portion of the thumb-screw is intended to work; freely in the slot c; but it is so arranged that by tightening the thumb-screw the end of the arm B may be secured rigidly to the slotted slat in any desired position, and the bed-bottom will remain in that position until the thumb-screw is loosened and readj usted. It will be thus seen that my improved bed -bottom is superior to all others of its class, for the reasons that it can be adjusted to lit any size bedstead, and by means of the eX- tcnded arm B and a slotted slat, c, it can be secured rigidly in that position until it is desired to readjust itto fit another size bedstead.
are preferably selected for attaching the device; but the locking device may be attached to any of the slats and the result will be the same; or, in order to more rigidily secure the bed-bottom in position, the locking device may be attached to both ends of the lazy-tongs arm, as shown at h and 7L,'Fig. 1. The `same locking device can be made to operate also without the use of the slot or thumb-screw by having a series of holes in the slat and a hole inthe end of the arm B, passing a pin thron gh it and one of the holes in the slat or by having the end of the arm B made in the form of a hook, so that it may be hooked to any of the holes in the slat.
To construct my improved spring bed-bottom I generally use from Jnve to eight slats like those shown at A to form the bottom, and the same number of slats to form thetop side of my bed. On the top side of the bottom slats I attach the jointed arms B, as described, and on the bottom side of the top slats I attach another set ofjointed arms like those attached to the bottom slats. I then secure in position the flat springs F, which are usually riveted to the j ointed arms, both top and bottom. The coil-springs D are then inserted and secured in position, one end being fastened to the bottom slat and the other end fastened to the top slat, as shownv in Fig. 2, and my bed is complete.
I am aware that jointed arms forming a lazytongs motion, in combination with the top and bottom parallel slats, as well as coil-springs, have been used heretofore, as shown in pat'- ent granted to me November 14, 1882, No. 267 ,316, and I do not claim such :as my present invention; but
