FOLDING BED.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Iletters Patent No. 671,297, dated April 2, 1901.
Application filed August 20, 1900. Serial No. 27,449. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW RUSSELL, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented a new and useful Folding Bed, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to improve ments in folding beds, relating particularly ID to improvements in the invention set forth in Canadian Patent No. 67,799, issued to me on the th day of June, 1900; and my object is to provide a bed-frame that may be narrowed to be used as a single bed and r5 shortened, converting it into a suitable cot for a child, or extended to full size, at pleasure, and thus occupy the space that is absolutely necessary only, and also to provide a bed-frame that may be folded into a small 20 parcel when taken apart for transportation or for any other purpose. I attain this object by the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows an isometric view of my improved bed-frame. Fig. 2 shows an enlarged view of one of the telescopic side frames or rods of the bed. Fig. 3 is a crosssection of the same, taken on a line a a through one of the suitable collars. Fig. :1: is a detail of the mechanism for fastening the ends of the side frames to the posts. Fig. 5 is a plan View of one of the collars, having the sockets for securing the side frames. Fig. 6 shows one of the telescopic tie-rods for con- 5 necting the side bars at the head and foot, respectively, and preventing them from contracting; and Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail of the mechanism for contracting or expanding the bed and a thumb-nut for fastening it 0 Where desired.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The head-posts 10 and the foot-posts 11 are preferably of tubing, having slots 12 and 13, respectively, down their inner sides from their tops to the plane of the bed. Securely fixed to the posts 10 and 11, at the lower ends of their slots 12 and 13, are dip-brackets 14c and 15, suitably secured to the posts, the brackets 14 being on the rear side of the bed and the brackets 15 being on the front side thereof. Said brackets 14 and 15 are provided with collar-sockets 16 for a purpose to be seen presently.
Rigidly fixed to the opposite ends of a telescopic bar 17, designed to form the rear side of a bed, are castings 18, having verticallydisposed tongues 18 arranged to fit into the sockets in the brackets 14. This holds the rear side posts 10 and 11 in a rigid position.
19 indicates a telescopic bar similar to the bar 17, designed for the front side frame of my bed, and on the opposite ends of this bar the castings 18 are loosely mounted, providing journaled supports,-which allow said bar to turn to reduce or expand the bed, as will be made clear hereinafter.
The side bars 17 and 19 are composed of pieces of tubing a and b, I) being designed to slide into a and fixed at the desired points by pins 20 taking through apertures therein. The side bars 17 and 19 are connected at intervals by flexible strips 21 of any suitable material, and these strips 21 are connected together by strips 22 of a similar material, placed at a certain distance apart and parallel to the side bars 17 and 19.
The head-posts 10 are connected by a flexible lattice 23, of any suitable material, the
connectedends of which, on its opposite sides,
lie in the slots 12 and are retained in a vertical slidable position and within the hollow tubing composing the posts by the pins connecting the slats together projecting on each side of said slats; but the top corners of said lattice are pivoted to the posts 10 by pins 24 within the slots 12.
The foot-posts 11 are connected together by a lattice similar to the lattice 23, as 25.
26 indicates a detachable brace or rod coilstructed telescopically similar to the side bars 17 and 19 and having downwardly-turned hooks 26 to be placed over the side bars 17 and 19. One of these ties is placed between the opposite ends of the bars 17 and 19, which 5 prevents the bed from contracting and the side bars 19 from turning when a weight is placed on the strips 21 and 22.
Detachably mounted on one end of the side bar 19, which is squared or flattened, is a crank-handle 27' for the purpose of turning the side bar 1 9,and thus contracting the bed when desired, and threaded into the crank of said handle in proximity to its boss is a thumb-screw 29, which when the crank is in the position shown in Fig. 7 holds it in a locked position by engaging the clip-bracket 18.
To reduce the bed in width, the thumb screw is slacked, the tie-rods 26 are removed and set with the hooks the proper distance apart, and the crank 27 is turned in the direction of the arrow, which winds the strips 26 on the bar 19. tween the bars 19 and 17, which will be controlled from further contraction by the tierods 26 being inserted between the said side bars.
By reason of the sections a of the side bars 17 and 19 being larger than the sections 1) it is necessary to provide thickened portions on the sections b for the strips 21 to take around, so that said strips will be all on an even plane. This I do by providing slidahle collars or ferrules 28 on the sections 1), and I prevent these collars from turning by having one of the sides of the sections 5 flattened and thickened, p'artsof the collars lying in such flattened portions. (See Fig. 3.)
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to be protected in by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improvement in folding beds-the combination with the head and foot posts, and collapsible head and foot ends connected with the said head and foot posts of brackets secured upon the posts, side bars mounted at their ends in the brackets, said side bars consisting of telescopic sections, one of said bars being rotatably mounted and having means at one end for turning it, and flexible cross-strips, having one end made fast to one of the side bars, their other ends being secured to the rotatable side bar to wind up thereon as the posts are drawn together and This reduces the distance be- I to unwind as the posts are separated, substantiallyas shown for the p u rposes described 2. In a folding bed having corner-posts of tubular form with slots on the inner sides thereof, clip- brackets 14 and 15 fixed to such posts at an even distance from their lower ends and sockets in such brackets; a telescopic side bar 17 on the rear side of the bedframe, having castings 18 fixed to its opposite ends; downwardly-disposed tongues on such castings designed to lie in the sockets aforesaid; a telescopic bar 19 on the other side of the bed-frame having castings loosely mounted on its ends with the tongues to take into the recesses in the brackets on the front side of the head and foot posts; straps 21 connecting the telescopic side bars at intervals, and means for turning the front side bar whereby the bed-frame will be contracted, and a thumbscrew for locking same, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In combination with a bed-frame having its corner-post of tubular material, the head and foot corner-posts being respectively connected by adjustable lattice 23 and 25, the opposite lowersides of which are arranged to slide up and down in slots on the inner sides of said posts above the plane of the bed-frame support; clip-brackets l4 and 15 having vertical sockets therein fixed to the posts below the slots therein and at an even distance from their lower ends'; telescopic side bars 17 and 19 forming each side of the bed-frame, having tongued castings therein designed to lie in the sockets in the brackets, the rear side bar 17 being fixed and the front side bar being rotatable, and telescopic tie-rods 26, having downwardly-bent hooks 26 on the opposite ends thereof to engage the side bars, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
ANDREW RUSSELL.
