COOLING-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 746,223, dat d D b f 8, 1 903. Application filed October 4} 1901. Serial No 77,626. (No model.)
sion of a novel construction of cooling board,
such as is used by undertakers, and has for its objects, primarily, a reduction in the bulk and weight of the board, and improvement in the stiffness and strength thereof, and a simplification of the structure in general, all as will more clearly appear in connection, from.
an examination of the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention in preferred form, and in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved cooling board when expanded in operative position;
Figure 2 is an inverted plan view of the same, showingthe main frame and leg braces in position;
Figure 3 is a side elevation, with the parts in operative position;
Figure 4 is an end View with the parts in operative position; t
Figure 5 shows an end view of the device folded ready for transportation or carrying; Figure 6 shows a detail of one of, the legs and the socket thereof;
Figure 7 is a detail showing a part of the leg bracing; v
Figure 8 is asectional view of one of the legs; Figure 9 shows one of the improved brace locks which I employ;
Figure 10 is an end elevation, partly in section, showing myim proved form of head-rest; and l Figure 11 is a side view of the head-rest.
Referring now more particularly to Figures 1 to 5 inclusive, it will be seen'that in carrying out my invention I provide a structure comprising a plurality of pivot'ally connected parts or sections forming what may be called the table of the board, which I have marked 12, the parts thereof beginning at the left in Figure 3 being marked respectively 12 12 12, 12, 12", 12 12 and 12 Eachof the parts or sections referred to comprises a flat or horizontal portion 13, preferably of wood (which maybe perforated for lightnessif desired, as shown at 14 in Fig. 2),
and a downwardly projecting rib or strengthening part 15,.the said ribs 15 being the means Y whereby the several sections are pivotally connected together byk'nuckle joints, and comprising as a wholewhatl have termed the frame of the board.
A short distance from'each end of the board there are secured to the ribs .15 leg sockets 16 which are preferably square in cross-section and embrace or contain slidable leg extensions 17 which serve to adjust the height of the board. On opposite sides of each pair of legsockets are arranged .a pair of joint- ed braces 18 and 19 extending across the board so as to stand, when erectedin' position, ap-- proximately at right angles with each other (see Figure 4), the free ends of said braces being provided with hooks 20 which engage with pins 21 that, passing through slots 22 in the leg sockets, are secured firmly in the leg extensions 17 (see Figures 7 and 8). The hooks 20 are provided with sliding latches 23 (see Figure 9) so as to prevent their droppingont of place when the board is in operative position.
The .legs are further braced longitudinally of the board by means of braces 24 and 25,
which are preferably attached'to theiribs 15 24, 25 are provided-with hooks 27 which engage pins 28 in the leg sockets 16, each pair of these braces being providedwith a pivotcdlatch device 29 (see Figure 7) for holding them from dropping out of" place when the board is in operative position. The leg sockets 16 are pivotally'mounted in U-shaped pieces 30 secured to the ribs 15 (see Figure 6), the pivot pins 31 for such pieces being also utilized as pivots for the base ends of thebraces 18 and 19in the leg sockets 16.
Referring now more particularly to Figure 3, it will be seen that at one end of the board,
parts 12 and 12 which are knuckle-jointed to each other are constructed so as to be capable of elevation into an inclined position, the degree of such elevation being determined by the notched segments 32 which engage the pins 33 which are secured to the frame parts 34 that at this end of the board form practically a continuation of the ribs 15, there being at this end of the board on each side thereof an extra rib part for the three clamps 12 12*, and 12 (see Figure 2), in order that these parts maybe raised to the inclined position, as shown.
. Referring now more particularly to Figures 3 and 5, it will be seen that, beginning at the right, the parts comprising the table 12 are of different widths; thus, for example, 12 is wider than 12 and 12 is wider than 12*, this provision being for the purpose of making it possible to fold or roll up the device after the leg braces have been taken down, and the legs folded against the table into the position shown in Figure 5, so that the whole apparatus may be placed in a telescope or ordinary case about the size of a dress suit case so as to be easily and inconspicuously carried about.
Another feature of my improvement has reference to the novel form of head rest which I employ, which is clearly shown in Figures 10 and 11,in which thereisacurved head piece 35 adapted to rest against the back of the neck of the subject, said piece being provided with a ball 36, socketed at 37 in the upper end of a post 38 which extends through the board and is formed with an adjustable latch 39 constructed to hold the head-piece at anyelevation desired. The ball and socket joint for the head piece is provided with a looking or thumb screw 40 to hold it fixed in any position in which it may be set. By this means it is made possible to manipulate the subjectin any manner desired with great convenience, and a minimum expense of time, the device being particularly useful for shaving operations.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A cooling board composed of knucklejointed sections and foldable supports for the same, the said sections being arranged in two series, the sections of one series alternating with the sections of the other series, and the sections in each series progressively increasing in length so that all the sections may fold compactly around each other.
2. A cooling board composed of a series of knuckle-jointed, alternately long and short, sections, both the set of long and the set of short sections respectively being progressively increasing in length, so that all the sections may fold compactly around each other with the said short sections covering the ends of the long sections, as described.
3. In a cooling board, the combination of a foldable set of knuckle-jointed sections progressively increasing in length each joined in alternation with one of a set of shorter sections, also progressively increasing in length, with jointed legs for said board and foldable bracing rods for said legs.
4. The combination of a foldable cooling board divided into two series of alternating sections the sections of each series being of progressively increasing lengths, an end section provided with a notched brace for alteringits inclination, fold-able legs provided with means for adjusting their length, and jointed diagonal braces capable of folding under the end sections of the board, substantially as described.
5. A cooling board composed of a series of CHARLES E. WINDOM.
