T. J. JOSLIN. Camp Bed.
No. 229,421. Patented June 29,1880.
".PETEIE. PHOTO-UTHDGRAPNER. WASHINGTON. D Q
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
THOMAS J. JOSLIN, OF FLINT, MICHIGAN.
CAMP-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,421, dated June 29, 1880.
Application filed July 30, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J JosLIN, of the city of Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Camp Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved folding cot-bed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section; Fig. 3, an end view when the bed is folded up. Fig. 4 is a detail view, to be hereinafter referred to.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in the class of folding cot bcds, having for its object the production of a cotbed which can be folded up compactly, so as to occupy but little space in packing for transportation; and to this end the invention consists in a novel arrangement and combination of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the claim.
, In the drawings, A represents the base or foundation of my improved bed, composed of the rectangular frames ac, hinged or pivoted together, asshown at a a.
B B represent two inclined frames,to which the canvas 0 is secured and drawn tight, as will be hereinafter referred to. The lower ends of the frames B B are pivoted to the side bars of the frames at a near their outer ends, by transverse bolts 1) b, passing through the side bars of the frames at a B B, and secured by screw-nuts b. Near the upper ends of the frames B B transverse bars 0 are secured, which leaves a narrow transverse opening, 0, between the top cross-bars, b, of said frames and thebars 0, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The canvas 0 has secured at one end a transverse bar, d, so that when the free end of the canvas is passed through the transverse opening a from the outside of frame B and draw tight the bar (1 will rest or abut against the cross-bars b and 0, thus securing one end of the canvas (3 in position.
... Upon the frame B, and between the crossbars b and c, is journaled, in metallic plates 0 e,secured to the sidejars, b b of said frame, a transverse rod or b r, E, having a longitudinal opening,c, thro gh it, and through which passes the free end of the canvas 0, it' being secured thereto by turning said rod or bar, thus winding the canvas upon it. The rod or bar E has mounted upon one end thereof a ratchet'wheel, f, with which a pawl, f, engages for securing the bar in position when the canvas is drawn tight. 'lhis rod or bar is provided at its opposite end with a ring, a, through which a suitable device can be passed for turning it.
The frames B B incline outward and upward when the bed is adapted for use, and are held in their inclined positions by the hooked chains 9 g, secured to said frames and engaging with staples g g, secured to the ends of the side bars of the frames 0. a, thus preventing the frames B B from being drawn toward each other when the canvas is drawn tight.
When it is desired to fold up the bed the canvas is given a little slack, so as to permit of the chains being unhooked or released from the staples, which permits the bed to be folded up, the frames a a folding the frames B B, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and thus occupying but little space.
I am aware that folding cot-beds are common, and such I do not desire to claim, broadly, as my invention; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a folding camp-bed, the combination, with the hinged foundation-sections a a, of the sections B B, pivoted to the outer sides of the sections a a near their outer ends, the adjustable canvas O,connecting the free ends of the sections B B, and the chains 9 g, for securing said sections in position when unfolded and the canvas stretched taut, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of June, 1879.
THOMAS J. JOSLIN.
