of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to collapsible or convertible furniture adapted for use in camping and the like-and has "for its object the provision of a collapsible convertible cot or bed and table designed primarily for use by motorists and intended when not in use to be contained entirely within an enclosing box secured upon the running board of an automobile whereby the device-will bev fully protected against dirt and the ct L tects of the weather.

, Ordinarily, the various parts of the device are entirely disassembled and are simply packed within the box 10 which is mounted upon the running board of'the automobile. When the use of the device is desired, the. operator or operators open the box, remove the various bars and other elements therefrom and then assemble the side bars by bolting them together with the bolts 17 which pass through .the elongated slot- ].6. The ends of the side bars thus assembled, which ends are provided with the holes 20, are then. engaged over the hooks l9 and the end members 22 which are connected by the bolt 23 are associated, with. the other end of the side bars by engaging.

The legs, which ordinarily are slid together as closely as possible whereby tooccupy but little space, are then extended and clamped in the desired position by means of the bolts which pass through the elongated slots therein.

The sections of the central reinforcing bar 29 are assembled and this reinforcing bar is then associated with the side bars and its legs. 30 are likewise adjusted to the same height as the legs 27. The lazy tong bottom structure which is connected with the assembled end bar 22 is then stretched out with its sidesresting upon the top of the side bars and with its opposite end resting upon the forward end of the box 10. Vhen desired, the covering is pulled from the roller 31 and hooked down over the end bars 22.

In order that the device may be used as a table whenflit is in its extended position of course, we provide a spring roller 31 mounted at the end of the frame adajcent the box 10 and having wound thereon a sheet of canvas 32 which is designed to be drawnoff the roller and along the frame to have its free end hooked upon the end member 22, as by means of suitable eyelets or other securing means. When the device is to be used as a bed this canvas is rolled up on the roller 31 and a pneumatic or other mattress is placed upon the frame together 1 of course with any other desired bedding.

rods 37 which are also telescopic and which are connected by a cross rod 38. Cross rods 39. likewise connect the upper ends of the pairs of rods 33. The top or canopy is completed bythe canvas cover 40 which is connected with the cross bar 39 nearest the automobile body and which is stretched tightly over the cross rods 39 and 38 and which has'its free end brought down and secured to the end bar 22, as shown at 4:1. This canvas may be used when the device is employed as a table but it is designed primarily for use when the device is used as a bed. As a further protection against inclement weather we provide suitable side curtains 4:2 suitably connected with the top and with the sides 15 of the frame, the connection being effected by means of the usual eyelets and turn buttons such as are employed on automobile tops and side curtains. It is of course to be understood that in fair weather these side curtains may be replaced by other curtains made of netting to exclude flies and other insects.

When thedevice is used. as a bed it is noted that the intended user may disrobe in the automobile and upon opening the door thereof pass directly into the bed beneath the collapsible top thereof, the box 10, which of course must be previously closed, serving as a step. The width of the bed will of course depend upon the length of the running board .of the vehicle to which it is attached.

When the use of a canopy is not desired it is detached and rolledup with the various rods thereof rolled within the fabric cover and the resultant bundle is disposed between the box 10 and the body of the car and secured againstloss by means of suitable straps 42 secured to the box and carrying buckles. It is of course apparent that when use of the device is not desired at all the sectional sides, cross members and telescopic legs are all collapsed and the. various parts are stored within the box 10.

From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that we have thus provided a simple and easily set up or taken down collapsible structure capable of use for the purpose specified and of great advantage to motorists, picnickers or others finding it necessary to provide sleeping accommodations by the roadside.

While we have shown and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it is of course to be understood that we reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.-

Having thus described our invention, we claim:

1. A device of the character described comprising an enclosing box adapted to be clamped upon the running board of an automobile, at collapsible supporting frame normally disposed within said box and formed of a plurality of adjustably connected sections, a collapsible bottom member of lazy tong formation adapted to rest upon the supporting frame when assembled, in combination with a canopy structure including pairs of slidably adjustable uprights adapted for association with the ends of the box,

the ends of the box being provided with sockets receiving said uprights, slidably adjustable inclined brace bars pivotally connected with said uprights, socket members formed on the intermediate portions of the side bars of the supporting frame, a'verticle adjustable inverted U-shaped arch having lower ends of its arms detachably engageable with said second named socket, and a cover connected with the upper ends of said first named pairs of uprights stretched over said last named uprights and detachably connected with the end bar of the frame.

2. A device of the character described comprising an enclosing box adapted to be clamped upon the running board of a vehicle, a frame formed of a plurality of slidably connected sections collapsible for disposition within said box and havingone end detachably connected with the box, supporting feet at the other end of the frame, a collapsible bottom of lazy tong formation disposable upon the frame and adapted to support a mattress to serve as a bed or being adapted for use as a table, a spring roller at one end of said frame, and a sheet of canvas carried by said roller and adapted to be secured at the opposite end of the frame to form a cover therefor when used as a table.
