CONVERTIBLE -HASSOCK AND BED Filed Aug. 18, 1949 3 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENT0R.S CATHERINE B. CREVELING ELMER V- PENNELL BY J all 1951 c. B. CREVEQLING ETAL 2,577,741
CONVERTIBLE HASSOCK AND BED Filed Aug. 18, 1949 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 IN V EN TORS CATHERINE B. CREVELING ELMER v. PENNELL A: TOR NEY head and foot top panels l5 and 20, by suitable linka e such as the chains 28, Figs. 1, 7 and 8.
Head and foot- boards 29, 30, are shown hingedly connected at 3|, 32, to the head and foot panels I5, 20, and pivoted braces are shown at 33 for supporting the larger, headboard 29 in the upstanding relation, Figs. 5 and 6.
The braces33 are shown in the form of links each hinged at one end to the headboard at 34, and longitudinally slotted at 35 to slide over the stop pins 36' on the ends of the headpanel l5.
In the present disclosure these pivoted and sliding headboard bracing links have an additional function, that of securing all the box forming parts closed in the folded condition illustrated in Fig. 2, where the lower ends of these links are shown as engaged over headed studs 37- on the bottom portion of the box, said links having keyhole slots 38 in their extreme end portions, enabling them to be keyed over these pins.
' To complete the securing down of all the parts, the headboard 29 is shown as having an overlap in engagement over the folded-down footboard 3!! through the medium of lugs or extensions 39 at the inner side of the foot-board which are overreached by the edge of the headboard .when it is folded down flat on top of the box In the illustration the cushion H is of a size to fit the center hassock section I 2, and this is approximately one-third the length of the bed. The other mattress section is shown at 4|, ap-
proximately double the length of the section II and adapted when folded double, as in Fig. 4, to
fit within the box section with the other bed clothing items and with which may be included the slip-cover I 0 for the hassock.
When in use as a hassock the device has the appearance and all the desirable features of an ordinary hassock or foot stool. When the cover and top cushion are removed and the parts locked closed as in Fig. 2, this unit may be used as a chest or stand.
When the side braces 33 are unlocked at 38,
the to or cover portion may be hinged open as in Figs. 3 and 4, and the folded mattress section 41 and other bedding items be removed and, if desired, the hassock cover beplaced in the box section for storage.
Then, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the head and foot bed sections may be lifted and extended and the two mattress sections placed thereon with the raised head and foot-boards locating and holdin the same in place.
In the folded and closed condition shown in Fig. 2, the device constitutes a firm, substantial, box-like structure which can be turned up on end and placed against a wall to serve as a stand, table or other article of furniture.
What is claimed is:
1. A folding bed and hassock combination comprising an intermediate hassock-forming section and bed-forming sections coupled in extensible relation to opposite sides of said hassock section to form therewith a full length bed and foldable into seated relation on said hassock section to form in such relation portions of the hassock formation, said bed-forming sections being hollow and telescopically engageable over the top of the hassock section, extension links hinged at opposite ends to the hassock and bed-forming sections, respectively, to project said bed forming sections away from the opposite sides of the intermediate hassock forming section when said bed forming sections are lifted off the top of the hassock section, said bed forming sections, by reason of their hollow structure, being engageable with the floor in self-supporting relation when so extended from the hassock section, and a bed spring carried by the hassock section and by said extension links and thereby extensible with said links when said bed forming sections are extended into the self-supporting relation described.
2. A folding bed and hassock combination comprising an intermediatehassock-forming section and bed-forming sections coupled in extensible relation to opposite sides of said hassock section to form therewith a full length bed and foldable into seated relation on said hassock section to form in such relation portions of the hassock formation, head and foot boards hingedly connected to said bed forming sections and foldable in overlapping relation down over said bed-forming sections when the latter are seated over the hassock-forming section, and a releasable catch for securing the outer board in confining overlapping relation over the other board.
3. A folding bed and hassock combination comprising an intermediate hassock-forming section and bed-forming sections coupled in extensible relation to opposite sides of said hassock section to form therewith a full length bed and foldable into seated relation on said hassock section to form in such relation portions of the hassock formation, head and foot boards hingedly connected to said bed forming sections and foldable in overlapping relation down over said bedformlng sections when the latter are seated over the hassock-forming sections, and a releasable catch for securing the outer board in confining overlappin relation over the other board and including means operable for securing said outer board is upstanding relation when the sections are extended in bed-forming relation.
