EUGENE FAUH, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING CHAIRS, BEDS. AND OTTOMANS COMBINED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,875, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE FAUH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Folding Bed, Chair, and Ottoman, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the ottoman; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bed, showing by dotted lines the chair into which it can be formed; Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the bed; and'Fig. 4:, a detail perspective view of one of the jointed braces employed thereon.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new folding bedstead, which when folded together will produce an ottoman, and therefore be in the most possible contracted form, and which when extended can have its head-piece raised and its foot-piece lowered to form a convenient easy chair. The invention consists in forming the bed in three jointed sections, which contain at their under sides the supporting-legs that can be folded under them respectively, each leg when extended being stiffened by jointed braces that connect it with the section to which it is attached, so that a strong and reliable support will be given to the bedstead.
In the accompanying drawing, the letters A, B, and 0 represent the three sections of my improved bedstead. They are made of upholstery-work, as shown, or may be caned, or otherwise constructed in suitable manner, and are all substantially of equal size, each being square, or nearly so, horizontally. The sections are hinged together in line to form a bed, as shown in Fig. 2, the joints between them being of such kind that when the bed is to be folded together the middle section B can be folded inversely over the head-section C, while the foot-section A can then be folded over the middle section, all asshown in Fig. 1. In this contracted position an ottoman is produced, occupying but little room, and useful as an article of furniture. Suitable casters a a are attached to the under side of the headpiece O, to form the supports of the ottoman, as shown. To the under side of pieces B A are hinged legs D D, which can be folded under these several sections when the device is to be contracted; the view, Fig. 3, showing how they are and can be folded under.
When the bed is to be made, these legs D D are swung out from under the sections, and are braced by jointed braces E E, which connect them diagonally with the sections above.
Each brace E is formed of two pieces, I; d,
shown in Fig. 4, one of the parts, I). having a projecting lip, 6, against which the piece d strikes to prevent the brace from being swnn g beyond the line at which it is to brace its leg D. Under the headpiece O is but one hinged support, F, which is also braced, as shown, and which supports the head-piece of the bed in an inclined position. When this device is to be formed into an easy chair, the legs at the outer end of the foot-piece, or all the legs under the foot-piece, are folded under, so that the foot-piece can be swung down upon the floor to be in the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. At the same timean extension, G, of the leg F of the head-piece is folded out to lengthen the said leg, and thereby raise the head-piece still higher; also as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The extension piece G is by preference made in form of a square frame pivoted at f f, in the framelike support F, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3, and held in such support F by a suitable spring-catch, g. Spring-fasteners for holding the legs folded under the several sections may be provided on the latter, as shown.
Having thus described myinVention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combined bed, chair, and ottoman, composed of three sections, A, B, and 0, folding-legs D D, jointed braces E, and support F, as set forth. 1
2. The head-rest support F and extension piece G, combined with hinged part 0, as and for the purpose described.
E. 'FAUH.
