FRANK nBEnL, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING ATTACHMENT FOR BEDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1920.
Application filed October 29, 1917. Serial No. 198,985.
To all who Be it known that I, FRANK EBERL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Attachments for Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to folding beds and has for its principal object the provision of a structure of this character in which head and foot members can be adjusted toward each other with the side rails interposed between the head and foot members likewise the spring fabric and the entire structure arranged in a compact package when the bed is folded and not in use.
Another object of the invention resides in the construction of side rails, each consisting of pivotal sections and combined with a spring fabric end whose combination with the joints between the sections of said side rails will be equally broken preparatory to adjusting the foot member toward the head member.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a folding bed or similar structure which will include head and foot members and sectional side rails, combining the same with supporting devices which will give stability to the side rails when the bed is adjusted for use.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangements of parts which will hereinafter be fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, has been illustrated, a single and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitations are necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
Figure 1, is a side view of the bed.
Fig. 2, is a section therethrough, on the line 22, of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, is a side view of the bed in its folded condition.
tions of one of the side rails.
Fig. 5, is a detail view of the brace barillustrating the manner of detachably con meeting the same with the supporting lugs.
F 1g. 6, is a perspective view of the spring section of the bed.
Fig. 7, is a detail view of the brace rod.
As. illustrated herein head and foot members 8 and 9, respectively are provided with corner sockets 10. These members are operatively connected together by an intermediate spring frame 11, which includes parallel side rails 1212 and corner members 13, which are connected to the ends of said side rails as clearly illustrated in Fig. 6. These corner pieces are provided with vertical tongues 14, which freely fit in the sockets 10, of the head and foot members. In this manner the spring frame 11, is entirely detachable from the head and foot sections to permit the parts to be readily cleaned and maintained in a sanitary condition, repaired or conveniently and compactly shipped or stored.
Each of the mentioned side rails includes a section 15, pivoted at 16, for vertical movement to the next adjacent corner piece 13, for the head member-and a similar section 17 which is pivoted at 18, to the corner piece 13, for the foot member of the bed. The sections 15 and 17, are pivotally connected together at 19, and as illustrated in Fig. 4, the sections 15 are adapted to overlap the sections 17, when both sections are in horizontal alinement. Keepers 20, on the sections 17, are adapted to strengthen the joint between the adjacent sections so as to resist an upward breaking of the jointswhen the bed is arranged for use. These keepers are adapted to be manipulated and may be of any suitable well known constructiom'whereby they may be conveniently released when the occasion necessitates a folding of the bed. A brace bar 21, connects the sections 17, of one of.
the side rails with the mating section 12, of the other side rail, and it is preferred that said brace rod be provided with angular ends 22, which find engagement in the eyes 23, of brackets 24, secured to said sections 17, (see Fig. 7).
The corner pieces 13, are provided with depending legs 25, while as illustrated, the sections 15, of the side rails are provided with vertical leg-like braces 26, which have pivotal connections with links 27. These links are also pivotally connected with the legs 25. This arrangement permits said rails to be readily folded and it serves most effectually to give stability to said rails when the bed is adjusted for use. The
, arrangement also affords a substantial brace to the spring section 12, as a whole, and the same combines with end braces 27', which extend transversely at the head and foot of the bed. In this manner, the legs 25, at the head and foot, are uniformly connected together and braced. The said legs 25, are provided with apertured brackets 28, in which angular extensions 29, of the braces 27 are received. Latches or retainers 30, on the bars 27 are adapted to be adjusted beneath the brackets 28, so as to confine the extensions 29, against the said brackets 28.
superposed relatively of the corner pieces 13, and fixed thereto, are vertical brackets 31, having passages 32, in which the hooks 33, of thebars 34, of the fabric frame are receiver. The fabric may be of any suitable well known design but it preferably in cludes springs 35, between the bars 34,and the body of the fabric. I find this arrangement desirable in that it affords a convenient means for breaking the joints of the rail sections 15 and 17, in an upward direction when the keepers 20, are released. It then follows, that as soon as the keepers 20, arereleased, the sections 15 and 17, tend to break in an upward direction at their joints in order that the entire bed structure can be folded to the position shown in- Fig. 3, 'where the head and foot members will be closely related to one another. Maximum compactness of paits is thereby provided for. 'The hooks 33, are curved downward and inwardly in order that they will not accidentally escape from their receiving openings 32, in the brackets 31,
when the bed is folded. The bar 21, shown in Fig. 6, also serves as a support to permit the spring fabric to be hung therefrom at its center when the bed is folded. This prevents the fabric from sagging at the'center and permits the same to be practically folded to lie in parallel relation with the head and foot members.
" The head and foot members are'provided with the usual supporting members 36,
similar .to members 37, on the lower ends of the legs 25. This arrangement is practical and convenient in that the head and foot members can be equally folded together. The structure may be used in connection with any well known forming of members, sectional members being preferred in order that the several sections thereof can be placed in the spacesformed between the spring fabric and the head and foot members of the bed when the latter is folded.
What is claimed as new, is
1. A foldable spring-bed unit for interposition between and engagement, of itself, with head and foot sections, comprising corner members having vertical tongues at their outer ends to seat in sockets of head posed relation to the corner members and extending longitudinally above the tongues to bear on the socket members of head and foot sections. 1
2. A foldable spring-bed unit for interposition between and engagement, of itself, with head sections, comprising corner members having vertical tongues at their outer ends to seat in sockets of head and foot secnation with the said head and foot sections having members in whichare sockets receiving the tongues of the unit, the brackets of the unit bemg arranged 1n superimposed relation to the corner members thereof and extending longitudinally beyond the corner members and resting above the tongues thereof and, on the socket members of the head and foot sections.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
